#1 The first American troops to fight the Axis powers arrived in Europe in late 1942. They were part of the Western Task Force, commanded by General George S. Patton, and they landed on the coast of North Africa.
#2 The first American invasion of the war took place in Morocco, and the Marne men, as the 3rd Division soldiers were known, were responsible for it. They had been initiated into the full chaos and confusion of combat in a couple of hectic, feverish days.
#3 Maurice Britt was a second lieutenant in the army when World War II began. He was married to a high-spirited, beautiful freshman named Nancy Mitchell. He had been selected for one of six roster spots on the Detroit Lions professional football team, and was highly respected by both fans and teammates for his dedication and endurance.
#4 Britt was sent to the 3rd Division, the legendary Rock of the Marne outfit that had saved Paris in 1918 by blocking the last great German offensive of World War I.

The American army was being reorganised and new generals were being put in charge. The Allies were back on the offensive, and by May 13, what was left of Rommel’s Afrika Korps was defeated and 238,000 Germans and Italians were taken prisoner.
