It was the start of summer in Maine; the air was just beginning to warm from a rainy spring. Jamilla woke up to the smell of pancakes cooking in the kitchen. Mmm, she stretched, how wonderful it is to have a home with Grandpa Kurt. He makes the best breakfasts.

The quiet morning was interrupted by the sound of a rooster crowing on the farm. The sun was just peeking up over the pine forest surrounding Grandpa Kurt’s home. Jamilla, along with her brother and father, had moved to Maine to watch over his homestead. Previously, she spent many summers on the farm; it was where she met her best friends. Last year, Kathy and Patty had joined her on an adventure. They followed a mysterious scavenger hunt and uncovered buried treasure. That should have been enough excitement for a lifetime, but she had a feeling that their adventures were just beginning!

Time to get up, said Jamilla’s father, Ed. You’re missing the best hours of the day. He was right: the golden hours of the morning were the most beautiful.

She yawned in acknowledgement. Jamilla didn’t care much for chores. But she loved to take her dog, Chip, for a walk. Good morning, Big Boy! she greeted him as the chocolate Labrador stuck his wet nose over the side of her bed. He leapt onto her mattress to give her wet kisses. She laughed as she hugged him, Let’s go see what today brings us.

Jamilla fed the chickens and checked in on the pigs and cows. Chip ran by her side; he was always protecting her on her rounds. Sometimes she felt like he was herding her like one of the farm animals. She looked at the friendly dog. It’s time for you to eat, too. Let’s go see if we can grab a few of those pancakes!

Chip barked happily at the thought.

Out of the corner of her eye, Jamilla saw her two friends on the horizon. Hi, Kathy! Hi, Patty! She waved as they rode up the driveway on their bikes. Jamilla took a breath of fresh air in through her nose. What a great summer day!

    It sure is! Patty exclaimed.

Yeah, Kathy grinned, especially since we don't have to go to school.

    The other girls agreed.

But we were kind of bored. Do you have any other adventures for us? asked Patty.

Jamilla shook her head, Not yet, unless you feel like having a few pancakes. Chip and I were just heading in for breakfast.

    Her friends nodded.

    Yes, said Patty, thank you!

About time, joked Kathy. I’m starving.

Grandpa Kurt was happy to see the girls and listen to their plans for the day.

We should go to the creek, said Jamilla.

No, it’s too muddy after the rain, dissented Patty.

    Maybe the diner? Kathy suggested.

Kathy, we just ate, laughed Jamilla.

Grandpa remarked with a twinkle in his eye, "Jam, your Uncle Ted has a cottage near the beach in New Jersey. Would traveling to a new state
