    Chapter 1: The Key

It was one of those crisp, cool mornings in Maine with autumn just around the corner. The leaves were starting to dry and crackle; they were falling from the trees that encased the winding road. The pines, however, stood stubbornly rooted in the sandy soil. They refused to be anything but green. Jamilla Jones, a bright and curious girl, could smell the brine of the ocean air as the car rolled onwards towards the sleepy town of Acadia. Her springy coils danced in the wind from the open window. Her father, Edward, drove the family sedan. Jamilla was pressed in by suitcases, pillows, boxes, and her younger brother Dan.

The beautiful scenery didn’t seem to interest her brother. Jamilla could tell he was growing more and more bored with each passing minute. He was just starting to voice his hunger when her father announced, Hold tight kids, we’re almost at grandpa’s farm. The livestock farm had a friendly bunch of chickens, cows, and pigs. The garden provided vegetables that her grandfather worked hard to grow. The farm had been in the family for over a century! The house is in need of repairs and grandpa’s getting older, her father reminded them. You’ll both need to pitch in. This will be our house now, too.

Dan groaned, I’m no good at cleaning.

Jamilla smiled. She was only four years older than the ten-year-old, but she felt far more grown up. That’s just what you want us to believe.

Jamilla’s teachers had told her that she was good with numbers. Numbers helped her to remember things and form images in her mind. For instance, she knew the number of steps it took to walk to grandpa’s front porch. She could count the climbing trees in her mind, and the number of branches it took for the best view of the ocean. Yet, when the seashell driveway crunched under the tires of the family car, she knew that the equation would be different. The miles from her home had been changed to zero. This was their home now.

If the old farmhouse at 74 Montgomery Road were a person, Jamilla would say it looked… old and lonely. Paint peeled on the siding, and mold grew up on the roof. Maybe, not unlike a person, some love and affection could cheer it up.

It’s not too bad, she said optimistically.

Can I sleep in the barn? Dan questioned his father.

Edward shook his head with a smile, You’re not one of the animals, Danny.

Grandpa Kurt waived at them as they drove up. After hugs and greetings, the kids spread out to explore their inheritance. Their father and grandfather had much to talk about as Dan ran to the barn to greet the animals. Jamilla walked up the rickety steps: the number was five and a half, since half of the first step
