    Chapter 1

DEAREST HAYLEY,’ ASKED the King. ‘What would you like for your birthday?’

The princess had been expecting this question. The King asked every year what she wanted and no matter what she asked for, he produced it. He was a very powerful and rich king. He had built her a treehouse made of pure gold. He had brought her a whole parade of polar bears all the way from the North Pole and made them do tumbling tricks for her.

His only daughter was the most precious person in his life. No request was too expensive or too difficult. Now it was almost her tenth birthday.

‘I’d like a comet,’ she said.

    ‘A what?’ asked the King.

‘A comet,’ said Hayley. ‘Nobody else has one. And they’re so sparkly!’

‘Indeed,’ said the King slowly. His mind raced. How would he find a comet? There were no comet shops, were there?

‘Diamond tiaras are very sparkly too,’ he suggested.

Hayley smiled. ‘I already have three of those. I don’t think I need any more.’

‘A hot air balloon would make a lovely birthday present. You could fly all over the kingdom with it and take your friends in it too,’ said the King.

‘That was my seventh birthday,’ yawned Hayley. ‘It’s in the backyard. No, I definitely want a comet.’ She pulled out a book called Simple Astronomy.

‘Look at this picture of a comet, Daddy. Isn’t it exciting? I’ve worked out that a comet will be passing near here in exactly one week’s time. That’s in time for you to get it for my birthday.’

Hayley had been studying this picture for ages
