For Ma and Deta…
Thank you for the gift of reading.
Acknowledgements
I would like to start by thanking all the people who have read everything that I have written over the years, especially my darling sister Namrata (who is also my greatest critic), my sweet Ma, my beloved husband Azhar, my dear friends, especially Priyanka, Lalita, Arunav and Madhusmita.
Azhar, this book would not have materialized without your firm and encouraging nudges over the years. You have finally succeeded in pushing the author you see in me out into the big bad world! Thank you, my little angel, Amaya, for being the most understanding two-year-old. The butterfly on the book cover is for you.
Daddy and Mummy, thank you for always looking out for me.
And finally, I would like to thank Team Pencil for bringing my words and thoughts to life.
1. Life Ain’t Smooth, Ever
Ups and downs in life are very important to keep us going because a straight line even in an ECG means we are not alive.
~ Ratan Tata
The ultimate wish everyone has, is to have a smooth life, isn't it? Half of my life has gone by (assuming an optimistic life expectancy!) and the one thing I have learned for sure is that life is anything but smooth. It is never the cakewalk we dream of.
They say, When life gives you lemons, make lemonade
. Some say, grab tequila and salt
, while the others say, make orange juice and leave the world wondering how you did it
. Easier said than done! Though, looking at the brighter side, it is hard but not impossible.
Life will always throw challenges at your face. It may be in the form of people, health, or even situations. You might have to stay or work with people whose wavelengths do not match with you... You might not be keeping well, or need to take care of someone who does not keep well all the time. You might be in a difficult relationship. You might have difficult children or relatives. You might have a difficult boss or subordinate. You might hate your job but need to continue due to financial burdens, and the list goes on… The challenges can be anything, but it is always up to you how you take them on.
We can crib, we can cry; or, we can simply take life head-on and turn each challenge into a life lesson. Instead of blaming God for all our problems and resigning to them as His
