★★★★★
"We often look at our lives as a collection of adversities that we have overcome. We mark our personal stories with struggles to prove that the lessons were both learned and earned. Not Dionne C. Monsanto. Despite having more than her fair share of adversity, Dionne has constructed a path that is outlined with the joys of her journey. This book is not about examining the pitfalls of life, it's about reclaiming the possibilities. I cannot think of a better conductor on this road to rediscovery than Dionne."
—Bassey Ikpi, New York Times Bestselling Author and Mental Health Advocate

FOREWORD
Dionne C. Monsanto is a self-made woman in so many ways, including that she re-made her body with yoga, spirit, fire, and willpower; and, as she puts it in the book, knows what it means when a heart has been cut, bruised, and hopefully sewn back together.
She has crafted herself into someone who transmutes pain into progress, and who is constantly aligning herself with her own needs and the needs of the world.
As someone who has just begun to work with Dionne, I see the passion she has for transforming other people’s lives as well. Her work INjoy is a practice of community healing, and as a woman of African descent with family in the United States and throughout southern Africa, I love her affirming approach to weaving culture into everything. And while I struggle with re-forming my eating and my body, Dionne’s focus on thinking of this as the process of creating my future self, one even more deeply connected to my ancestors and the future I want to leave subsequent generations, has been powerful.
We are living in complex and trying times, when naked political and economic attacks on justice are commonplace and where death has entered too many of our homes during the pandemic. Now is a time of both uncertainty and renewal, and Dionne is here to help us connect to ourselves and each other in a spirit of growth, health, and soul. These chapters give us a chance to receive her wisdom and embody it ourselves.

MEMORIES MAKE ME
I DON’T HAVE A PLAN FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY DAUGHTER’S DEATH. #fail
I am a planner! I plan what I eat. I plan what I wear. I plan when I get a manicure, when I get a pedicure, when I take a nap, I plan when I'm going to plan. I even make time to plan with friends. So how could you have forgotten to plan for this?!
I say to myself. I yell at myself.
It is December 2020, and I am gutted that I do not have an idea of how I will celebrate Siwe and the 15 years she lived. I am berating myself and working myself into a full on anxiety attack. Dionne really? You knew this day was coming? What are you going to do?!
Dionne calm down.
I walk to her bedroom to sit and reflect. It's beautiful here. I love this room; it is so bright and cheery. I'm surrounded by her books and her pictures. Pictures of her with her friends, with me, with her brothers. It holds her guitars, her trophies, her ashes. She is dead. Grief strikes like hot iron and I am gutted and raw AGAIN. I cry. A snot-nosed ugly cry. She has been dead for almost 10 years and you cannot even think of a tribute befitting of her?! I am failing her again. I cry and hold her Elmo and fall asleep crying.
I wake up, light a candle and incense. I sit with Elmo and we stare. We stare at the bottom of her bookshelf at the doors I never open. Those 2 doors protect all of her journals, her writings and the things that weren't published. She was a writer. She did not get to publish her novel or her children’s book. She did not get to…
WAIT! That’s it! I will write a book! I say I am living the life I never lived AND the life she cannot live, right? So I have to write, I have to publish. So I look at Siwe’s picture in front of her ashes and tell her I am going to write a book. Decision. Decided!
The best way for me to honor the 10th anniversary of Siwe’s death is for me to write a book.
So many people know me as I am now ASD (after Siwe’s death) so they think it was always this way. And others, when they learn of my daughter’s death by suicide, or the myriad of deaths and unfortunate situations I have lived through, they marvel at my smile. They ask me how I did it. They call me brave. This book is only the beginning of me detailing the how. I am not done and life will have more tests for me. I know I will keep having opportunities to test my strategies out over and over again.
Being told I am not a good writer, I wrote this book afraid and to prove to myself that I could. I needed to make my inner 5 year old happy and proud.
I wrote and published this book because I could and my deceased daughter, Siwe, could not. In my heart, I wrote this book so others would know that they are not alone. I want my tribe to find me. I need to know I am not alone.
This book is for you if you, like me, are a woman that is all things for so many people and but not for YOU.
If you are feeling alone (maybe even abandoned) as you deal with life’s challenges, may this book be a beacon of light for you.
This message is bigger than me and has to be shared. It is my hope that it will impact thousands or millions who are in despair with little or no hope. I hope someone says, If she can do it, so can I.
In my bones, I know 2 things and they keep me going.
Joy is your birthright.
Transformation is possible.
Live Life INjoy!
