    About the Author

    My Other Books

    Introduction

    4th Edition

I had a dream to get out on the roads and travel. I began this book trying to compile a list of free campsites in the West that would suit my needs. I did not know how I would travel (truck, van or RV), so I sought sites that had a restroom (pit, vault, or flush). This book, then, is intended for any mode of camping and optional use of restroom facilities.

I figured 300 sites would be enough. After bypassing 300, it occurred to me that I could keep going and turn this into a travel guide. I currently have over 2400 sites, drawing upon numerous resources including websites, Internet searches, books, magazines and videos. New to this edition is the inclusion of over 400 linked YouTube campsite videos. These are marked with a + sign. I would welcome your corrections or additions. Please send them to SecondHarvestBooks1@gmail.com

From the Table of Contents, you can click on any state and search for campsites. I have used the closest or most reasonable town to find each of these campsites. However, you should search for other nearby towns because a given campsite may be listed under another town. Most directions are derived from Google maps. These directions generally start in the center of the town, though you may start anywhere along the route. They will end at or within view of the campsite. These may be slow roads, so you might want to check Google Maps to get an estimated time of travel.

Each listing includes as much detail as I could find. You may be able to find further information, including reviews, by pursing my sources, as well as looking for videos. Please note that GPS data can vary from the spot where it was taken or by whom. Think of these as approximate. The terms day and night are interchangeable.

Most campsites are open all year, unless otherwise stated. However, they may be accessible only when weather permits. Do not count on amenities being available in the off season. Some amenities may be available in a central location and not at the actual site. All campsites listed are free, but they may request a donation. Other campsites will be free only at certain times of the year, usually off season.

Some states or facilities require a pass to enter or camp. Many Southern California campsites require a pass. I have tried to avoid listing those situations. I have listed campsites in Washington, even though many of them require a yearly pass; there would be too many sites to otherwise exclude. If you are planning to spend a large amount of time in Southern California or Washington, it may be to your advantage to purchase a pass. This may be true in other states as well. New Mexico has a wonderful yearly pass.

It may be possible to camp in a vehicle in a sno-park unless signage says otherwise. A statement from California’s sno-parks is probably valid in other states, also: Overnight parking, including in-vehicle camping is allowed except where noted or signed at SNO-PARK sites. Tent camping or sleeping outside a vehicle in the parking area is prohibited at all SNO-PARK sites. You will have to judge each location individually, as states usually do not talk about summer usage in these sno-parks.

Also, I have tried to avoid other specialized camps (horse, group, and off-road vehicles) and most rest areas. These generally have limited appeal and only favor certain people. There are other resources available to find these camps and rest areas.

Unless otherwise stated, most campsites are available for 14 days. After 14 days in some public lands, you will need to relocate a certain distance away. Always check with signage, camp hosts or rangers. Some sites may be closed because management is lacking personnel to check on these sites due to Covid-19 and/or because sites have been severely trashed. Please leave your site clean of all trash to help keep the site open for others to enjoy.
