The Wilkins Children's Tale of the broken watch - Charles Hall

Chapter 1

It was a lazy summer afternoon in the Wilkin’s household. The house was quiet except for the buzzing of flies and the occasional grunts from the farm animals. Clive Wilkins, a young boy of twelve years, was drifting off to sleep on the porch exhausted from the never ending chores at the farm with a ginger ale in his hand.

A small hand plucked the ginger ale from his hand. It belonged to his sister, Lily, who was three years younger to him. She kept the can over his face and the tiny droplets of ice cold water started dripping on her brother’s face. Clive felt the cold water on his face and woke up with an irritated look to find his sister’s laughing at his expense.

Get that out of my face, yelled Clive and pushed his sister out of the way. Lily squealed and ran off inside the house to find her mother. Woken from his afternoon slumber, Clive sat upright and rubbed his eyes. He was feeling hungry and could hear his stomach grumbling. He followed his sister to get something to eat.

He found his mother, Emma, making preparations for dinner. Lily was seated next to her, gobbling up chopped pieces of carrots from the bowl.

Mom, I am hungry. Can you get me something to eat? said Clive.

I am busy making dinner here, Clive. It’s already half past four in the afternoon, we will have dinner in a couple of hours. Remember, you have to run to the store and get me some fresh bread like you promised in the morning. replied Emma. She knew she had to bribe Clive to make sure the bread was at home on time for dinner.

Here, take an extra two dollars and get some snacks to eat at the village. Get something for Lily as well added Emma

I too want to go along with Clive demanded Lily. Glad to have both of them out of the house and some quiet time. Emma asked Clive, Can you take your sister along with you?

Unable to think of any good reason to not take her along, Clive agreed to it with a grunt surprising his mother. Secretly, he was very fond of his sister and liked her to accompany him. Time flew with her constant yapping.

Grabbing their coats, both of them made their way out of the house when Lily came up with a request, Can we take Bubbles along with us? I will ensure that he behaves. You know that we get free treats from villagers whenever we take him along.

"Mom won’t allow it
