#1 The author’s life was controlled by other people’s opinions. He was always shy and self-conscious, but never considered it a problem until he was nominated for a senior award. Then he felt like a total failure.
#2 I had no answers, but the events of the day certainly brought these issues to the front of my mind. I was a Christian, but that didn’t help me put up a fight. I still felt self-consciousness, being controlled by the opinions of others, or whatever it was called.
#3 I had a conversion experience when I was a seminary student, and I realized that I didn’t have to care about the opinions of others. I could simply be aware of God’s opinion of me, which was rooted in the finished work of Jesus.
#4 I thought my treatment was working, until I got married. Then I realized that I was still being ruled by the opinions of others. I wasn’t feeling fine, but I wasn’t motivated to investigate further.

What you need will control you. When you are in need, you are controlled by whoever or whatever you believe can give you what you think you need.
#6
The fear of man is the epidemic of the soul that controls us and makes us replace God with people. It is the root of peer pressure, people-pleasing, and codependency. It is the fear of being exposed as an impostor.
#7
The most dangerous form of the fear of man is the successful fear of man. Such people think they have made it, and they feel good about themselves. But their lives are still defined by other people rather than God.
