    The Gift of Rest

Those who feel tired and worn out will find new life and energy. Jeremiah 31:25, CEV

Evening is the time when daylight starts to fade and our work and other activities from the day come to an end. This is the time when we can rest and reflect on our day. But, how much of this time do we actually spend resting? We usually find it difficult to relax because it seems as if there is always something to be done, which makes us feel that there is no end to our workload.

However, what we may not realize is that rest is an important gift that God has given to us. In the first chapter of Genesis, we read that God created heaven and earth in six days and rested on the seventh day. Because God is eternal, He does not get tired. But, God rested to show us how important He values time off from focusing on our work and taking time to be with Him.

Evening is the time to pull back from the busyness of the day and connect with family and friends, as well as spend time with God to refresh our souls. Rest is a gift from God that we rarely open, and what better time than evening to open His gracious gift.

    Prayer

Father, thank You for giving me Your gift of rest. Help me to pull aside from my work and schedule time with You to reflect on my day. As I rest in You, I ask You to refresh me so that I can continue to move forward and do great things for You.

    Are You Hiding from God?

When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Genesis 3:8, NLT

Adam and Eve lived peacefully in the exquisite garden of Eden where they were completely surrounded in God’s glory. God came to the garden in the evening to visit the First Couple.

One day, however, when Adam and Eve heard God walking in the garden, they hid from Him because they knew that they had disobeyed God by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which God told them not to do (Genesis 3:8). But, being tempted by Satan, Adam and Eve ate from the tree, and sadly, were exiled from Eden. As a result of disobedience, Satan stole Adam’s God-given authority to rule the earth. For this reason, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ (the Second Adam) to restore the first Adam’s stolen authority.

So, when we sin, we do not have to run and hide from God like Adam and Eve did that evening. We can rid ourselves of guilt by confessing our sins and receiving forgiveness through Jesus Christ (1 John 1:9).

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, I feel a deep sense of guilt when I sin and want to run and hide from You like Adam and Eve. I repent of my sins and ask for Your forgiveness. Thank You for giving me Your peace and grace through Jesus Christ.

    Our Spiritual Debriefing Session

The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. Psalm 145:18-19, NLT

Many organizations hold debriefing sessions so workers can report on the results of a project or event. Those involved identify the successes and failures of the event, develop new strategies, and discuss changes that can be made to improve the next project or event.

During the evening prayer watch, we can have our own debriefing session with God. We can tell Him about the high and low points of our day and the worries we have over certain situations. Many times, we find ourselves at a crossroad because we do not know what to do. However, the good news is we can turn to the Bible and find comfort in scriptures that relate to our situation. Most importantly, we can ask God to give us strategies and tactics we need to succeed, along with boldness to handle the issues that we are
