COREY

Ilean against my truck outside the Last Stand country bar, watching drunk nightclub cowboys and scantily clad women in short denim skirts filter outside to debate their after-hour plans. Checking my watch, I know they announced last call ten minutes ago, and everyone besides staff must be out in the next fifteen. I push off my truck and head toward the door.

Denny, Max, and Troy, three of the biggest bad asses I know, have their eyes fixed on a group of guys itching for a fight.

Denny glances my way, recognition wiping away his scowl. Corey, man, where have you been? He extends his hand, and we clasp palms. I nod at Max and Troy who return my greeting with the same wordless head nod and an arch of their brows before their attention goes right back to the group.

I had some shit come up, but I’m back now.

Cool. It’ll be good to have you around.

Dawn inside? I ask, even though I know she is. It’s Saturday night, and she doesn’t miss our biggest tip night.

Yeah, she’s closing up the back bar. Denny says at the same time Max says, Here we go.

All three men take off for the fight that’s broken out, one guy easily taking the smaller and much drunker guy to the ground. I guard the door as Denny, Max, and Troy make quick work of the brawl, and stifle a laugh
