Introduction
Many times in our lives, silence is undervalued. We live in an age of sounds without meaning and shatter without purpose. But do we even care? Whether from phones and horns, factories and machines, friends and relatives, media houses and society, anxious thoughts and lingering desires, we are trapped in the soundbox of life’s ceaseless noise.
Enduring the deafening silence in speechless conversations can feel like hanging over a cliff with cords that are getting loose before our eyes. The hush of life, mixed with dread and anxiety, is a terrific mind-unsettler. But why should we panic for lack of sound? When did ‘silence’ mean to death the equivalent of what ‘sounds’ mean to life? How long must we shiver alone in the cold silence of our singleness?
Composers, writers, and other artistic workers require extra silence for maximum outputs. And most artists delve into the solitude of silence to obtain awestruck inspirations. Musical halls and libraries are preset to accommodate a level of silence and coordination to deliver optimum resonance and focus.
‘Silence,’ as a word, has a Latin etymology and is defined as still, windless, quiet, and slow. It also means to cease, grow still, undisturbed, or be silent. When we refer to silence as an adjective, in essence, we are describing a fixed period of time or rather, a state of being or awareness during a period in life. Silence is an invisible partner that speaks without words and accompanies humanity at different points in life for a specific purpose.
Socially, silence may give the impression of danger, yet oftentimes the reverse is the case. God is the giver of stillness and silence. It’s in the stillness that God speaks and implements the elements of our destiny.
When talking of the hush and awe that saturated the making of Adam and the noiseless surgery that introduced Eve, you will find the divinity of silence. Before there was breath in Adam’s nostrils, while his form laid still in God’s creative hand, there was silence. Then God drew His breath in the silence of inhalation before the exhale, after which man became a living being.
Hence, from the silence came the life that drove in our purpose, personality, and identity. Why loathe silence when it holds your destiny? Why struggle with stillness when it’s meant to birth your direction? My friend, the silence you are experiencing could be God’s gift to you if you desire to learn how to harness the power deposited inside of you. Do you wonder why everyone starts out single before marriage or any kind of relationship? Have you ever thought that singlehood could be God’s precious gift of silence? It’s time to overcome fear and embrace the beauty of silence, even if it means singlehood.
Fortunately, silence grants us rapport with the strengths encrypted in our physical and spiritual DNA. God situated silence to perform greater good than we have ever discovered or even utilized. However, this raw, dynamic, explosive power of silence is one that will take practice to unravel and master.
Even though my experiences in life allowed me to visit the address of silence, yet I believe there were times when silence itself found me. I never truly understood the value of seasons of silence from God’s lenses. Today, I only wish I was taught this spiritual power of silence in my youth.
My Story
My journey started in March of 2004. I was a minister at my local church assembly. One early morning as I slept, I heard the voice of God speak to me in a dream. He said to me, Tell them, ‘Don’t be afraid of the silence,’
and instructed me to go to Genesis 2:19-20. I immediately got up and grabbed my Bible to see what that scripture said. Upon reading these verses, I understood the popular attraction or fascination that society, and surprisingly many Christians, have about the idea of dating is incorrect.
I am convinced this error has a lot to do with the fact that we don’t understand the purpose of silence in the years of our singlehood. Even with the purest intentions, I realize this error causes unnecessary detours of distraction or grief in our lives. Hence, I began to explore this controversial territory.
After this encounter, I began to understand the virtue in silence and goodness in solitude. I remembered that, like most people, I had never adeptly considered the importance of silence until the moments of my epiphany.
Adam had his season of silence. The days, weeks, months, or even years before Eve. Adam was alone, yet undisturbed. He was quiet and alien to the meaningless distractions of noise and cares of this life. Now, am I saying that Eve—the mother of all living—was a distraction and disturbance to Adam? Of course, not! She didn’t have to be Adam’s bane. Eve is not an excuse for Adam’s disobedience, and this I’m certain. All
