    CHAPTER 1

    The dream

    Suspense and fear filled her veins as chills ran down her spine. The house with the red door. The only house with a red door on the street. She wasn’t sure who lived here or where this street was, but she always found herself facing this red door.

    She couldn’t stop hearing the cries. These dreams always ended with Jali waking up in a cold sweat. The same dream that has no meaning, the red door, that strange street and the cries. This reoccurring dream has haunted her for years. She has researched it, talked to various psychics and psychologists about this dream but to no avail. Today she dismissed it, it’s a big day. The finals.

    Jali was completing her undergrad securing herself a place at the Royal Brisbane Hospital (RBH) as their incoming registrar seeking to specialise in cardiology. She can officially be called Dr Jali Benford now, something she has wanted for years. Her hard work, commitment and dedication has paid off.

    She jumps out of bed and grabs a phone to check her messages. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just a couple of messages from the usual suspects.

    Jali enjoyed her morning coffee, read the latest news on her Samsung galaxy S10, and planned her day at the same time. She had two classes in the morning to attend at University of Queensland, (UQ), finalise her last paper to be submitted and a quick chat to the Dean of Medicine as part of her graduating process. Jali is an A student. Known to her supervisors, colleagues, and clinical team as a collaborator, dedicated, people person. Jali was very excited as she made her way out of the Dean’s office, knowing she was about to graduate with honours and head straight into
