    A Lesson from Grandmother

    My Grandmother would send my parents hand-written letters from time to time.

    She would start on the front of a sheet of paper. When that was filled, she would continue on the back of the paper. When that was filled she would return to the front of the paper and fill the top margin, then the right-hand margin (turning the paper sideways), then the bottom margin, then the left margin.

    Then she’d turn the paper over again and fill the margins on the back side. When she had completely run out of room; that was the end of her letter. And, having been an English Teacher for many years and an Editor at a Newspaper for many more, her letters never ended awkwardly in the middle of a sentence.

    I thought it was humorous for her to do that rather than use another sheet of paper. Now, I do the same thing in order to save paper, in order to save trees, in order to save the environment.

    Grandmother grew up in a time when paper was a luxury. It was not something to be wasted.
