    Chapter One

    Am I in or Out?

    The Place to Start

Am I in or out? Am I a Christian or not? What is a Christian?

In 1970, I served as a US Army chaplain’s assistant in Vietnam. While studying the Bible in the MAC-V (Fifth Military Airlift Command) Annex Chapel just outside of Saigon, several army and air force personnel tried to come up with the purest, simplest, and most accurate description of what a Christian is. I have not seen or heard a better or more accurate definition since that time. A true Christian is a person who has a personal relationship with the person of Jesus Christ.

Before we can live the Christian life, there are some things we must understand. First of all, living the Christian life is not a list of things to do or things not to do. Instead, it is a supernatural life with Jesus living in you. This is a serious decision that each one of us must choose for our self to accept or reject.

Regardless of who you are, God loves you and can give you eternal life; you can live forever! God’s words in the Bible give us a set of Christian principles to live by. With these principles, you can make the right choices and decisions throughout your life. Living the Christian life is not a philosophy or just a good way to live. Instead, living the Christian life is living within the supernatural power of God, the giver of all life. The only way a person can live the Christian life is with the supernatural help of God.

You have to first become a Christian before you can start living the Christian life. The good news is that if you are not a Christian, you have choices: you can choose to become a Christian, or you can choose to simply learn about who Christians are and what they believe. So are you in, or are you out?

If you are a Christian, how long have you been one? Do you understand the work God is calling you to do? If you are truly a Christian, then you are said to be saved. All who are saved are called by God to a special mission in the greatest operation in history, but first, we need to review our understanding of salvation and our responsibility to share the Good News with others. If you are not a Christian, do you want to be a Christian? The question is not so much am I in or out? but really, Do I want to be in or not? You got to make that choice!

If God made you, then it is He alone who knows why; and He alone has the authority and power to give you purpose, meaning, hope, and direction for your life.

A person is not saved by getting all excited and shouting. A person is not saved by being baptized. God’s own words in the Bible show us the only way of salvation that God has provided for us. A person knows for sure if they are saved by seeing if they are in compliance with God’s plan for salvation. Holy God, who made us, is the only one qualified to make the rules! We can decide to believe and accept His generous offer, but His way is the only way there is because He is the only true God there is! He made the earth, sun, moon, and stars and gave all living creatures their existence.

We, Christians, believe God used spiritual men in the past to write down for us all of His truth in His own words, the Bible. God tells us in the Bible all we need to know about living the Christian life and how to know if we are in or out.

And Jesus answered him, saying, ‘It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ (Luke 4:4)

But he answered and said, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.’ (Matt. 4:4)

Because all of us have sinned, we need to be saved or redeemed. Do you know anyone who is perfect? Of course not! God and heaven are all that is perfect, pure, and holy. God is completely pure and right. God will not allow anything or anyone contaminated with the rot and stink of sin to enter into His presence.

When an apple is rotten, do you keep it with the good apples? No! You throw it away, so it doesn’t contaminate the entire basket of good apples. Bad apples will contaminate the good apples, and they will all rot. Sin is anything you do that you know is morally or ethically wrong. Anything we do that is not right in God’s eyes separates us from the rightness of God. That’s why mankind must be thrown away. But God loves us and has provided a way for us to be restored or redeemed from our rotten sin and for us to come into fellowship with God, who loves us.
