they picture a cuddly kitten or a fluffy dog – maybe even a hamster or a bird. Most people do not associate the image of a horned and bearded goat with the word pet
. Pygmy goats are, however, becoming very popular as pets and for good reason. These animals are very friendly and can be incredibly entertaining. If you have ever wanted a pet but don’t want to go for something traditional
like a cat or dog, a pygmy goat might be the right choice for you.
While these animals may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the word pet,
they actually make great companion animals. Pygmy goats are incredibly intelligent and affectionate by nature, which makes them a joy to keep. Additionally, the cost and care required for keeping these pets is significantly lower than keeping other kinds of livestock. If you are looking for an entertaining and unique pet, consider the pygmy goat.

Chapter Two: Understanding Pygmy Goats
1.) What Are Pygmy Goats?
The pygmy goat is a breed of miniature domestic goat that is often kept as a meat goat. These goats also do well as milk producers and they are sometimes kept as pets. Pygmy goats are hardy creatures and are easily adaptable to a variety of climates and settings. Though similar in appearance to other breeds of domestic goats, the pygmy goat exhibits a few anatomical differences including the existence of dewclaws as well as a thurl, the type of hip joint commonly found in cattle.
2.) Facts About Pygmy Goats
Pygmy goats typically weigh between 50 and 90 lbs. Females of the species, called does, generally weigh between 53 and 75 lbs. (24 to 34 kg) while males, called bucks, weigh between 60 and 90 lbs. (27 to 39 kg). Most pygmy goats reach a maximum height at the withers between 16 and 23 inches (41 to 58 cm). Pygmy goats display a wide variety of colors including white, black, grey, brown and several variations on caramel and grey agouti.
Pygmy goats are hardy animals and they tend to be very good-natured and docile. These features are what make the pygmy goat a popular pet. In addition to its friendly nature, the pygmy goat is also a good provider of milk and an efficient browser. These goats do well in a variety of settings and they are capable of adapting to almost any climate.
These goats do not require a great deal of special care. In fact, they will do just fine provided with little more than an 8x10-foot shed furnished with sleeping and feeding areas. Given adequate space to roam and graze, these goats make very active and sociable pets. Not only are these goats fairly simple to keep, but they are also precocious breeders – females generally bear one to four kids every 9 to 12 months.
3.) History of Pygmy Goats as Pets
Pygmy goats originated in West Africa in the Cameroon Valley. There are two types of dwarfism evident in goats in Africa. Achondroplasia results in disproportionately short legs with a plumb body and a short head while pituitary hypoplasia results in a small goat with normal proportions. The first of these two types is more common in West African goats while the second type is common throughout the southern Sudan.
In Britain, the Pygmy Goat Club does not differentiate between the two types, though it is thought that modern pygmy goats are more closely related to the dwarf goats of West African than to those from the southern Sudan. Prior to the formation of the club in 1982, dwarf goats were identified by regional names such as Cameroonian, Nilotic, Nigerian, West African and Sudanese. The Pygmy Goat Club in Britain discarded these regional names, however, in favor of the generalized name Pygmy Goat.
It is thought that these goats were domesticated as early as 7,000 B.C. but they weren’t imported from Africa into European zoos until the 1950s. Pygmy goats were kept on display as exotic animals in the zoos of Sweden and Germany and were sometimes used as research animals. In 1959, the first shipments of pygmy goats were sent from Sweden to the United States. The recipients of these shipments were the Rhue family in California and the Catskill Game Farm in New York State. Over time, the popularity of this species spread and they were soon kept by private breeders as pets and exhibition animals. Today, the pygmy goat is a common sight in petting zoos and they are also widely kept as pets in both North America and Europe.
a.) National Pygmy Goat Association
The National Pygmy Goat Association (NPGA) is the official breed association of the pygmy goat in the United States. This association was formed in 1975 with the goal of "supporting the Pygmy Goat in the United States by collecting and disseminating information, protecting the breed standard, and
