Know Your Goats - Jack Byard
1.
Anatolian Black
Native to:
Turkey
Now found:
Mediterranean and Aegean regions
Description
This has long, coarse flat hair - normally all black, occasionally brown, grey or pied - and large, long, droopy ears. Its weight is 45-198kg (99-198lbs), and its height is 76.2-101.6cm (30-40").
Goats like the Anatolian Black have been bred and developed for almost 3,000 years up to the present day. The Anatolian is believed to have originated in Turkey, and with its long hair and large droopy ears, is classed as the Syrian type of goat. These mountain breeds are normally found around the Mediterranean and Aegean regions and are well-adapted to surviving the wild weather and sparse feed. The long, thick, hairy overcoat insulates the Anatolian against the cold, and the breed also has a tremendous tolerance to disease. The breeders set up camp in the mountains with their herds, where the Anatolian browse on grass, shrubs and bushes - goats are brilliant mowing machines. These calm, gentle goats are bred for their fibre, milk and meat.
