Feedback loops are everywhere in systems, and understanding how they work helps you be more flexible with the variety of feedback you receive and incorporate, and you can offer better feedback to others.

There are two basic types of feedback loops: balancing and reinforcing. A balancing feedback loop is one that tends toward equilibrium, whereas a reinforcing feedback loop amplifies a particular process. Your thermostat and heating system are both examples of balancing feedback loops.

The feedback loop of others’ reactions to our actions is the basis of civilization. We in turn respond with approval of the same behavior on the part of others.

Creating the right future incentives is very important. If you solve the problem at hand, you could create a reinforcing feedback loop of future problems.

To change people’s behavior, you have to change their incentives. You can’t just make everyone do what you want them to; that won’t work. Instead, change the incentives for the people who are already doing what you want, or who are most likely to do what you want.

Feedback loops are a great tool to use in order to influence behavior at the margins. They are used in criminal justice systems to deter unwanted behavior.

Information cascades occur when a large number of people draw the same conclusion from the same limited information. They can be either positive or negative, depending on the information they convey. They occur because we rarely have perfect information, and in many situations, we look to others to determine what we ought to do.
