Life is like a tango; fortunate are the few who can master it.
~ A.J. Graces
The above quote clearly states that life becomes meaningless if we haven’t specialized any skill. There was a time in the past where in case if the person is unskilled, then also he can make his living very comfortably. But in today's dynamic world to remain unskilled is not a better option to choose. In fact, we can't even imagine our lives without mastering any skill. Skills generally mean 'an ability to do something well'. Skills are classified into two categories such as Significant and Insignificant skills. Significant skills are those which have more importance and which create value to the opposite party e.g. Problem solving, Creative and Critical thinking, Negotiation etc. Thus, significant skills cannot be easily mastered by anyone, it needs a lot of effort. Skills work for those who work for it. While on the other hand the Insignificant skills are those which have very low importance and to master it is not a big deal. There are some old fashion skills like harvesting through bullock carts, making the clothes at home and hand crafting etc. So not only is it important to have a skill but it is also important which type of skills you have!
Your skill can be either an asset or a liability for you.
~ Justin Ho
So, the selection of the skills you are going to master is a very crucial decision to take. In today's rapidly changing world you can't afford the skills which are obsolete. So, you must update your skills to cope up with the changing environment. Nearly 33% of formally trained employees all over the world lost their jobs due to lack of update in their skill. Thus, there is a vast difference between the skills which are used in the past and which will be needed in future. There will be almost no value of obsolete skills. Since a long tenure we are researching on the skills which will definitely play a vital role in future. Below are some significant skills which would help you to enhance and nourish your future.
● Decision making
● Complex problem solving
● Creativity
● People management
● Emotional intelligence
● Service orientation
● Critical thinking
● Coordinating with others
● Negotiation
● Cognitive flexibility
Now let's dive into the ocean of all the above-mentioned significant skills which will be beneficial in future if it has been mastered.
Decision making skill:
In simple sense decision making is the skill of making a choice between two or more alternatives or course of action. But in today's dynamic world we can’t just be helped by decision making but we have to go for the effective decision-making skill. Decisions may affect personal level or organizational level. Before taking the decision, every individual must have seen its pros and cons. Because once it has been taken it can’t be replaced easily. So, the skill of taking effective decisions is going to be very important in the upcoming future. Leadership, Intuition and Teamwork etc. all these need an effective decision-making skill.
Decision making reminds me of a real-life situation. I've heard it from a very senior airport manager.
North East of India is the land of seven sisters and there was a small airport surrounded by small hills & tea gardens on the bank of River Barak. The in-charge of the airport was very enthusiastic and dynamic personality. Once they hosted a sport meet in the residential complex of the airport. They invited all the nearby organisations for participation. The in-charge deputed many people to do various activities. But when it came to the trivial activities like cutting of grass and making the ground ready, the staff members were reluctant to do so. Everything was jeopardised.
They conveyed that it was not a part of their regular duty.
The in-charge thought for a while and changed his uniform and with a grass-cutter he himself went out to cut the grasses. Suddenly there was magic, and all the sub staff started to work with the officer. So, what was that?
Yes, it was the right decision taken by the officer at the right time when the time was a constraint and the best preparation was required.
Decision making in management practices is indeed a very critical and cerebral process.
Now we will discuss the problems which everyone must overcome to master the skill of decision making. Below mentioned are the hurdles or obstacles which stop you from making an effective decision.
● Not enough information:
If an individual is making decisions without any information then it can feel like decisions without any basis. Take some time to collect and properly analyze the available information and thereafter take an appropriate decision.
● Too much information:
The very opposite problem is having too much information. It can be also termed as ‘paralysis of information’. This much information can create confusion and it can lead to conflicts in future. But you need to learn how to be precise with your information box.
● Too many people:
Making decisions with a committee is very difficult. Everyone has their own views and values. And while it’s important to know what these views are, and why and how they are important, it may be essential for one person to take responsibility for making a decision. Sometimes, to take any decision is better than taking none. That’s actually the reason that most of the companies choose CEO’s.
● Vested interest:
In simple terms vested interest means intentions behind taking decisions. Decision-making processes are often found under the weight of vested interests. These vested interests are often not overtly expressed, but may be a crucial blockage. Because they are not overtly expressed, it is hard to identify them clearly, and therefore address them properly. E.g. the decision of students while choosing their career pathway.
● High emotional attachments:
People are often very attached to the status quo. Decisions tend to involve the prospect of change, which many people find difficult. Some decisions are based on high emotional belief which can lead to a big failure.
● Zero emotional attachments:
Sometimes it’s difficult to make a decision because most of the people just don’t care one way or the other. In this case, a structured decision-making process can often help by identifying some very real pros and cons of particular actions, that perhaps we hadn’t thought about before. So, to ignore all the views of the other persons and to be totally autocratic is not the right way to take effective decisions.
The above were the problems which arise while making an effective decision.
Now below enlisted are the steps which will help to improve decision making skills.
● Identify the situation.
● Note potential solutions or actions.
● Take decisions on the basis of statistics.
● List the advantages and disadvantages of each option.
● Choose on the final decision and measure the results.
Critical Decision Making:
Future is nothing but the result of the choice of decisions taken in the present. If the decisions are better than it may lead to a prosperous future and on the other side if the decision is not proper
