Riding into Fire - Raven Gulley

    CASH

I walk into the clubhouse with a grin plastered on my face. I have never been better. I can’t wait to tell the boys I was able to kill Laken, the bitch who tried to kill my old lady.

Martin is the first one to notice me. I’ve been wondering where you’ve been. I thought you were right behind me when I walked out the door.

Pete called me and told me about Laken being down by the marina. I am all smiles since I was able to get what I wanted today. I can’t wait to tell Darcy, and I know she’s going to be proud of me. Let’s just say she’s not living on this earth anymore.

Martin whistles. You deserve a beer, my brother.

I walk over to the fridge to get a beer. It calls for a celebration until we have to go out later tonight.

Slash comes into the living room with a puzzled expression on his face. What’s going on?

I just got done killing that fucking bitch, I tell him proudly.

Slash slaps me on the back. How did you do it?

Pete props his feet up on the end table and makes himself comfortable on the couch. He was way too nice about it if you ask me. I would have made the fucking bitch suffer.

I stare after Pete and grumble. I did make her suffer, since I shot her twice.

Pete shrugs. I would have choked the fucking bitch to death.

He’s been around me for the last ten years and it’s no secret the way I kill. I have never choked anyone to death. My gun is my best friend when I kill people. I don’t like for people to suffer, so I make it quick and easy.

Slash sits down beside Pete on the couch. You still angry about Natalie?

Natalie is Pete’s ex-girlfriend. The two of them were together on and off for ten years. She ended things with him while he was in jail for five months. When he got out of jail yesterday, he had gone home to their house to get his stuff. While there, he saw her in bed with Liam.

Martin shakes his head. Natalie is the reason I don’t want a woman.

I roll my eyes. Not every woman is like Natalie, dumbass. Besides, if a woman doesn’t want to be with you when you’re in jail, you’re better off without her.

Pete folds his arms across his chest. I went to Jaycee’s today so that we could fuck. Natalie comes up in my mind. I couldn’t even get any pleasure because I couldn’t finish. If that’s not some fucked up shit, I don’t know what is.

I nearly choke on my beer with laughter. Sounds to me like you just need to let her go. Forget all of the shit that happened between the two of you. Just let things be what they are. If you don’t, she’s going to fuck with your head forever.

Pete flips me off. Nice advice coming from you, Cash, considering you’re with Darcy. You will never have to let her go. I thought I was going to get that with Natalie.

Martin lights a cigarette and blows out smoke. Now you know why I’ve never been serious about having a girlfriend, Pete.

Slash lets out a sigh. I let go of my ex-wife not once, but twice, and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. For the longest time, I blamed her for our son’s death when it wasn’t entirely her fault. His death ripped our marriage apart. Life is better without love.

I couldn’t imagine what life would be like without Darcy. She’s my soulmate and the good part of my soul. Yes, the two of us do argue sometimes, but at the end of the day we always find a way to make things work.

Pete leans back against the couch. It wouldn’t be so bad if Liam wasn’t a Southern Demon and if he hadn’t been involved with what happened with Darcy. That’s what really gets under my skin.

I take a sip of my beer and try to keep a level head. He’s the one who’s going to be next. I don’t know where he is. I just hope he hasn’t gone far. The anger rushes out at once. It’s something I can’t control. I clench my teeth and flex the muscles in my neck. I can’t wait to get ahold of him. I may not be one to make people suffer, but with him he’s going to. I plan to beat him unconscious and then blow his head off.

Martin squeezes my shoulder. We are going to get him tonight too, Cash. You just wait and see.

I picture the wall as Liam’s head and throw my bottle of beer. The glass shatters, and the blood rushes out of his skull. I laugh imagining it. I can’t wait for it to become true. I sure do hope so, Martin. If not, I’m going to be wasting a whole lot of beers.

Slash comes over to me and grabs hold of my shirt. Don’t be throwing beers now. You’re wasting the good stuff. Why don’t you throw darts instead? We have some downstairs in the basement.

I get up out of my seat, fully prepared to do just that, but Heath walks in the door. He’s the sheriff of this town and likes things done his way.

A scowl is on Heath’s face. I’m sure he’s probably angry that I killed Laken. What part of cremating bodies is so hard to understand?

I withhold my laughter. I’m sorry, Heath. I really am. I will try to do a better job next time.

I made a promise to him several years ago, when I became president, to follow his rules. The main rule that he has is if we murder people in this county, we have to get rid of the bodies. Whether it be cremating the bodies or letting his pigs eat them. He thinks the Feds will be down here in a heartbeat, sticking their noses in places they don’t need to be.

It’s not like we go killing people every month. The people we do kill are few and between. So, to me, his worry isn’t something he should be all that concerned about.

You better do a fucking better job next time, Heath snaps. Especially if you don’t want us all to spend the rest of our lives behind bars. I’m warning you now, Cash. If any Feds come down here, things aren’t going to be okay between us.

Leave it to him to overreact about things. I know what I’m doing. I might not be the smartest man to walk this earth, but I’m no dummy either. Trey and Diego, our two prospects, are supposed to be taking care of the problem. If I had to guess, they are probably taking their sweet time with disposing of the body.

What really has your dick in a wad? I ask.

Heath narrows his eyes at me. My dick is in a wad since we are sitting here doing nothing about those girls. I do realize it’s not midnight yet and all of your guys aren’t here. But we need to get started with searching.

I had only seen one girl at Donald’s house earlier, but Donald himself had admitted to having a human trafficking ring.

His reasoning is clear now, and I understand his worry. We will start looking. You just need to tell us where you want us to go.

Heath pulls out a map of this county from his pocket. Martin and Pete will go with me to Donald’s house. I’m going to see what I can find, then we’re going to head out to Dead Wood Falls.

Dead Wood Falls is a town on the edge of this county. It will be a good place to look around. It’s an area in this county where a lot of crimes are committed. A place well known for the cops to have a presence there.

Slash and I will start here in this neighborhood and work our way out to the marina. If we see any cars on the road, you better believe we are going after them, I tell him.

I wasn’t going to let Heath know it, but me and Slash will be making a pit stop at my house. I want to see Darcy and make sure she is okay. I’m worried about her, since it’s been several hours since I’ve seen her.

Slash pulls a cigarette out of his leather cut and lights it. He does it purposely since Heath fucking hates it when we smoke around him. Sounds like a good idea to me, Cash. It’s ten-thirty now, so hopefully by the time we do that, the rest of the guys will be here.

Heath wrinkles his nose and gives Slash a look of disapproval. I’m hoping when we go to Donald’s house there might be something for me to go on with where the girls are.

Has Donald checked himself into a hospital nearby? I ask.

Heath scratches his head. He’s not at Heartwood Springs Hospital. I already checked it.

I clench my hands in a fist. Slash and I both shot him multiple times. He wouldn’t have survived the car ride an hour away to Red Bear Mountain. I think someone is holding him up at their house.

Slash nods, agreeing with me. I don’t think we should rule anything out. Who would he have connections with to not keep him in a hospital?

Donald wouldn’t talk to me if the sky fell on his head, Heath says, changing the subject. I’m not worried about finding anything out by him. By the sounds of it, he could be barely clinging onto life.

We’ll have the rest of the guys split up when they get here, I say. Until then, we can only cover so much ground.

Heath turns to the door and gets ready to go. Pete and Martin, we need to head out. This discussion is over.

Pete follows Heath out the door and Martin is hot on their tail.

Slash finishes off his cigarette and then turns to me. So what is it you want to tell me?

The two of us walk towards the door. I look out the window and see the three of them leave. They step out into the darkness of the night. Natalie came to the grill and asked me about Pete. I told her about Jaycee, and how Pete would never get back together with her. I just wonder if it was a mistake.

Slash shrugs. I think you’re thinking way too much into things, brother. I’m sure you don’t have anything to worry about.

I sure as hell hope not. I never did take Natalie to be a psychotic fucking bitch.

Pam, my aunt and Martin’s mother, is still awake when I get back home. She’s sitting on the couch smoking a cigarette. I don’t know if Darcy is still asleep. She just went in the bedroom a couple minutes ago.

Slash sits down on the couch beside Pam. I’ll be right here waiting on you, brother, when you’re ready to go back out.

    I shouldn’t be long, I say.

I just need to tell Darcy about Laken and give her a good night kiss.

I open the door to my bedroom, and see Darcy still wide awake. Her long blonde hair hangs in curls around her face. The light from the table lamp shines around her, bathing her in soft gold like the angel she is. She examines the ring she’d retrieved earlier from her childhood home. When she sees me, a smile forms on her face. Well, isn’t this a pleasant surprise.

I had to tell you the good news about Laken. You don’t have to worry about her anymore, sweetheart. I took care of it.

She grows silent and then stares back at me. I’m glad to hear it. Thanks for coming by and letting me know.

I nod. I probably won’t be back until tomorrow morning, so this is good night.

She wraps her arms around my neck, and I lean down to kiss her lips. "I want a baby more than anything in this world. What happened to me opened my eyes up to that. Being
