The Unicorn's Mane - Laura Greenwood

    One

    Nathalie

The moving boxes were stacked by the door, a stark reminder that Nathalie's best friend was moving out of the flat they both shared. She didn't resent Molly that she'd found her mate, and was happy for her friend, but it also drove home that Nathalie hadn't found hers. If anyone asked, she'd pretend that she was happy with her career and her work on the Shifter Council, but that wasn't quite true. She'd been dreaming of the day she'd find her fated mate for as long as she could remember, and a small part of her hated the fact she hadn't found them yet.

Nathalie sighed and pushed her traitorous thoughts aside. She wished Molly nothing but happiness, even if her life was going to be spent with a grumpy dragon shifter who seemed to hate everyone and everything. Though her best friend constantly reminded her that there was more to Drayce than it outwardly seemed. Nathalie had to take her word for it. She didn't know Drayce beyond their interactions on the Shifter Council, and the few times they'd crossed paths in the flat before Molly had announced she was moving in with her mate.

She opened the fridge and started pulling out the ingredients to make dinner for her and Molly. While her friend might be in the process of moving in with her dragon shifter, she'd still need food to get her through the rest of her packing. Somehow, Nathalie's fellow unicorn shifter had managed to cram three people's worth of stuff in her mid-sized room and was now having trouble making sure it was all packed up.

She dumped the ingredients on the side and opened her phone to pull up her music app. Before long, her thoughts were chased away by the upbeat sounds of her playlist. She made up a lasagne while singing along to her favourite songs.

While it would suck not to live with Molly anymore, she knew it wouldn't be the end of their friendship. They'd known each other for far too long for that to happen, and Nathalie really was happy for her friend's newfound mating bond.

The click of the front door had Nathalie reaching for her phone and turning down the volume.

    Hey, Molly called.

I'm in the kitchen, Nathalie shouted back.

I didn't expect you to be anywhere else, Molly said as she stepped into the room. You always cook when you're upset.

I'm not upset. The words rushed out a little too quickly for her comfort.

    Mmhmm.

There's a bottle of wine in the fridge.

I know, Molly said. I still live here for another week.

    Sorry.

Don't be, I know this is a weird situation. Molly got the wine out of the fridge and poured it into two glasses.

I just need to put the lasagne in.

It smells good already, are you sure we can't eat it now? Molly asked.

Nathalie chuckled. And that's why you aren't allowed to cook. She opened the oven door and slipped the lasagne inside.

I don't see what would be too bad.

    Do you like raw pasta?

Not particularly, it's hard to digest.

Nathalie shook her head, not quite believing that her friend was so clueless when it came to basics in the kitchen.

She grabbed her glass of wine and made her way over to the sofa where Molly was already getting comfortable.

How are you getting on with the moving? Nathalie asked.

Molly groaned. I hate this bit. If I never have to move house again, it'll be too soon.

Nathalie chuckled. Do you see yourself staying in Drayce's house for long?

Molly nodded. You'll have to come see it after I'm settled, it's amazing. There's so much space.

I suppose that's the advantage of falling for an older guy. Though even as she said it she realised she didn't even know how old Drayce was. With shifters, it often didn't matter after they reached maturity. And Molly certainly wouldn't care.

Mmm true. It's just the luck of the draw, I guess. I could have come out a lot worse.

At least you've had a chance to find someone, Nathalie murmured, accidentally sounding a little more bitter than she wanted to.

Have you thought about trying MatchMater? Molly asked. Maybe you'll find your mate there?

    The app? Nathalie asked.

Mmhmm. I've heard that it can be great for finding your mate, Molly said.

Nathalie sighed and swirled her wine around in her glass. I'm not sure."

Whyever not? You want to find your mate, right?

You know I do, she murmured.

Then what's the problem with getting a little bit of help? No one else seems to have a problem with it. Or are you doing the classic Nathalie thing of sitting back and expecting your fated mates to walk through the door and sweep you off your feet?

I'm not expecting that to happen.

Molly raised an eyebrow. You've been watching too many rom-coms.

Nathalie sighed. "It just seems so impossible. All of the other Shifter Council members have found their mates. I always thought
