The Unofficial Book of Handmade Cricut Crafts: Creating Personalized Gifts with Your Electronic Cutting Machine
By Crystal Allen and Andrea Marvan
()
About this ebook
Throughout the pages of this book, author Crystal Allen will walk you through thirty new Cricut projects that can be personalized and given as gifts, no matter the occasion. With her easy approach, "pro-crafter tips," and step-by-step photos, you'll feel like you're crafting with your best friend.
Whether you are a skilled crafter or new to DIY, you will find exciting ways to use your Cricut Maker, Explore, and/or Joy.
If you're new to the Cricut scene, you'll want to pore over the pages that help you unbox your Cricut, giving you a general understanding of the parts of your machine, as well as tips for using Cricut Design Space and Cricut Access.
If you're an experienced Cricut crafter, you can skip ahead to the projects, which use the most popular materials your Cricut can cut. These include fabric (cotton, felt, and fleece); basswood and chipboard; leather; vinyl; paper; and heat transfer vinyl. Tips for using infusible ink are also included.
Projects include:
- Glitter Cups with Hidden Message
- Tic-Tac-Toe Board Game with Photo Faces Game Pieces
- Milestone Baby Blankets
- Leather tool roll
- Wood Welcome Sign
- Magic Sequin Infusible Ink Pillows
- Hello Doormat
- Birth Stats Toddler Stool
- Wood Veneer Earrings
- and so much more!
Crystal's hope is that the techniques learned throughout the book, along with the (free!) included cut files, will inspire you to create designs of your own that you can not only gift, but also sell on creative marketplaces such as Etsy and even at craft fairs.
With your Cricut cutting machine and this book, you'll always be prepared with a handmade gift idea for any occasion including holidays, birthdays, graduations, baby showers, housewarmings, weddings, and more! Show love and appreciation with personalized, handmade gifts that are easier to make than you ever thought! (Seriously, get ready to hear a lot of "You made this?!")

About the Author
Introduction
Hi, crafty friend! I am so excited that you have discovered this book and that we get to craft together! My name is Crystal Allen, I’m the owner of Hello Creative Family, and I LOVE Cricut crafting! When I first started using a Cricut cutting machine back in 2014, I had no idea how much this incredible crafting tool would change my life.
My Cricut has introduced me to an amazing community of crafters from all around the world, some of whom have become super close friends. My Cricut has created business opportunities for me that I never imagined. From writing craft books, to selling my own design files, to selling projects I’ve made with my machine both locally and online—my cutting machines have opened so many doors for me, and those doors just keep opening! Perhaps most importantly, though, my Cricut has allowed me to spread pieces of love to people I care about in the form of handmade gifts.
I can’t even begin to tell you how much joy and satisfaction I get from giving someone I love something I made for them using my Cricut. My Cricut cutting machines allow me to personalize gifts so that they are one of a kind. I truly believe that when someone I care about receives one of my handmade gifts, they can feel my love poured into it. My guess is that you feel the same way, too!
That’s why I’m so excited that this book is all about handmade gifts made with the Cricut! It’s filled with 30 projects that are perfect for gifting for all kinds of special occasions including weddings, birthdays, housewarming, baby showers, teacher appreciation, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas, and more!
Not only are these projects great for giving as handmade gifts, but they’ll also help you really get to know your Cricut cutting machine and all the amazing things it’s capable of. I’m sure it will help inspire a ton of your own unique ideas and might even help you make that leap to selling projects you make with your Cricut online and/or at craft fairs! People love giving handmade gifts, and if they can’t make them themselves, they love supporting artists who do!
I’ve broken this book into six sections:
Which Cricut Is Right for You
In this section, I will share the differences between the Cricut Joy, the Cricut Explore, and the Cricut Maker, tell you what materials each machine cuts, and help you determine which machine is right for you!
Unboxing Your Cricut and Setting It Up
I have heard from so many readers that they bought a Cricut and that it’s been sitting in a box in their craft room for six months or more! I’m going to show you how easy it is to unbox your Cricut, get it set up, and to create your very first project.
Cricut Design Space Basics
Design Space is amazing! Once you know how to use it, the sky is the limit for what you can create! I’m going to walk you through the basics, and before you know it, you’ll be using Design Space like a pro!
Download Your Free Cut Files!
I’m giving you the free personal use cut files for all the projects in this book, too, so that making them is a breeze! Find the download link and password on page 46.
Your Cricut Toolbelt
There are so many Cricut tools and accessories on the market, but which ones do you actually need? I’m sharing my favorite tools that will help make your craft life easier and help you get professional results every time.
30 Handmade Gift Ideas with Free Cut Files
You have your Cricut, it’s all set up, you know how to use Design Space—now it’s time for the real fun to begin! I’m sharing with you 30 projects that are perfect for giving as handmade gifts using some of the most popular materials to cut with your Cricut.
If you finish all the projects in this book, I can pretty much guarantee you will be a Cricut expert and that the sky will be the limit for what you can make.
Now, if you’re reading this book, then chances are you fall into one of four categories:
1. You’ve heard about the amazing things that Cricut cutting machines can do and you are considering buying one. (Do it!!! Your life will be forever changed.)
2. You’ve recently purchased a Cricut, it’s still sitting in its box, you’re feeling overwhelmed, and you’re looking for a bit of help. (You have come to the right place! I can’t wait to help you get that bad boy out of the box, set up, and get you to start crafting!)
3. You are a Cricut newbie, you’ve unboxed your Cricut, you’ve cut your first few projects, but now you’re feeling overwhelmed by ALL THE THINGS it can do. (We are going to have so much fun! Before you know it, you’re going to be a Cricut expert and will be cutting this, that, and everything with your Cricut.)
4. You are a Cricut expert, your Cricut is your ride or die
craft tool, you know it can do so many amazing things, and you’re here for some extra crafty inspiration! (Yay!!! I hope you are inspired by the 30 projects in this book and that you have so much fun with it.)

Which Cricut Is Right for You?
You’ve seen all the amazing Cricut crafts your friends have made on Facebook. You’ve been dazzled by your favorite influencers’ Cricut creations on Instagram. You’ve pinned more than a few incredible Cricut projects on Pinterest. And now you’ve made the decision—it’s time to buy a Cricut! Yay! I am so excited for you! Now the only question is: Which one to buy? The Cricut Joy, the Cricut Explore, or the Cricut Maker?
The first thing to note is that the Cricut Maker can do everything that the Cricut Explore can, and more. If money isn’t a consideration, then I highly suggest you buy the Cricut Maker.
Let’s be honest, though—money is a consideration for most of us. So, what’s the difference between the Cricut Maker, the Cricut Explore, and the Cricut Joy? Let’s compare the three machines, shall we?
CRICUT CAPABILITIES
Cricut Maker
Cricut Explore
Cricut Joy
Cricut Joy—The Portable Cutting Machine
The Cricut Joy is Cricut’s new mini-but-mighty cutting machine. Weighing in at less than four pounds, the Cricut Joy makes crafting anywhere and everywhere easy! The new technology in this machine lets you cut Cricut brand Smart Vinyl, Smart Iron-on, and Smart Infusible Ink without a mat!
One of the biggest features (besides the portability) that has given this tiny cutting machine such a big buzz is the matless technology. When using Cricut’s Smart
product, you can cut a single design that is 4.5 inches in width by 4 feet in length, repeated up to 20 feet in length.
Another feature that has paper crafters especially excited is the Cricut Joy Card Mat. The mat has a folder on top that allows you to insert the back half of a pre-made blank Cricut Card into the folder, keeping it protected so that you cut only the top part of the card.
The Cricut Joy can cut 50 materials including iron-on, vinyl, Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets, cardstock, and Smart Labels. You can find the full list in the Appendix: Which Materials Can Each Cricut Cut? section of this book (page 226).
The Cricut Joy is an incredible little machine that makes crafting portable and is perfect for small spaces. The capabilities aren’t as wide as with the Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore, however, this machine is a fabulous starter machine and perfect for crafters with small spaces, people who want to craft on the go, kids and classrooms, or for people who don’t see themselves creating projects that are more than 4.5 inches in width.
Cricut Maker vs. Cricut Explore. What’s the difference?
The biggest difference between the Cricut Maker and the Cricut Explore is the invention of the Adaptive Tool System, which the Cricut Maker has and the Cricut Joy and Cricut Explore do not. Unique to the Cricut Maker, the Adaptive Tool system brings together three major technologies that give professional class–cutting versatility and performance:
1.
