    Chapter One.

    Katy, wake up! my dad yells from the bottom of the stairs.

    I yawn and stretch luxuriously. Then the realization of what day it is hits me, and I bounce out of bed. 

    Today is officially the last day of high school. Today the results from the previous semester’s exams get posted. My straight A aggregate assures me acceptance into the University’s science program, launching me into applying for the scholarship I need to get into medical school. The competition for a place in the program is fierce but I have been working so hard for this. I want to make my parents proud.  Downstairs I can hear mum bustling in the kitchen, and the irresistible smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts up to my bedroom.

    If I don’t get ready now, I will miss the ride to school with Jared, Janet, and Alice.  It’s not that it’s far, and I could easily walk but the four of us have stuck together through everything, and it would be good to finish the race together. I turn the knob for the shower and don’t wait for it to get warm. I let the ice-cold water hit my face and blast off the last vestiges of sleep. Pulling a loose green cotton shift over my still damp body, I check my glowing complexion in the mirror.

    I wear my hair loose around my face; it is thick and auburn and gleams with health. My green eyes sparkle with excitement.  A quick lick of lip gloss, and I’m good to go.

    Good morning. Mum is pouring a cup of the delicious coffee into Dad’s cup as I burst into the kitchen.

    Honestly, I am the luckiest girl alive. I always wanted brothers and sisters, but my parents dote on me, and they have done everything to get me to this point. Alice and Janet are like sisters to me anyway. 

    Hi Katy, love, Dad says as he lowers his newspaper. Today’s the big day, right?
