    Chapter 1: The Dream

    He stood in the shower as the ice-cold water fell over him, icicles burying their way into his scalp and muscles. He couldn’t take a relaxing warm shower anymore because that would mean he would close his eyes. And if he closed his eyes, well, that would mean that he would have to see everything unravel all over again—his own personal nightmare on replay only he could not change the channel in his mind.

    He turned off the water and stepped outside and looked at himself in the mirror with disdain. Where he’d had well-formed muscles before just looked like little hints of historical physique. He couldn’t train now and he couldn’t eat well. Not that it mattered anyways since the food never stayed down for too long. He grabbed the towel from the rack and dragged it across his face first, noticing not for the first time, the slight smell of mildew caught in the rough fabric. He wiped himself down and then wrapped it around his waist and walked back into his bedroom.

    Picking up his phone he noticed with utter despair that only twenty minutes had passed during since he’d gotten out of bed and into the shower. It was only 1:32 am and he knew that everyone he knew would be sleeping now. Any one he knew that might have been out this late was surely wrapping up and heading home now. With no other choice, he slipped into his boxer shorts and pajama pants and t-shirt and climbed back into bed.

    Come on, man, Leroy said to himself, You’ve got this. Just close your eyes and go to sleep. Wake up tomorrow and we can move on from there. Just get some sleep. He laid in bed and heard the faint dripping from the bathroom shower. He’d been meaning to fix that leak for months now, who knew how much it was costing him in his water bill. But he’d been too
