Epigraph
As hunger and appetite propel us to find food, needs and curiosity drive scientists to explore new frontiers. Before all comes the faith that alleviating suffering, breaking barriers, and advancing the quality of life is possible.

Preface
In this novella, I use experimental fiction to explore the metaphysical, reincarnation, and trauma. One of my goals was to show how someone traumatized might integrate her subjective and objective realities within a supportive environment. Alternate endings let the readers develop their own conclusions.
Over the years, my clients came from various levels of society and diverse ethnic-cultural backgrounds. They included professionals, celebrities, clergy, witches, warlocks, prostitutes, alcoholics, addicts, and the physically or mentally injured. I worked with children, adults, and now seniors. I discovered that trauma is a common denominator shared by both the affluent and homeless.
As a clinical social worker/psychotherapist, I have learned to view my clients through a Person-in- Environment (PIE) lens against historical backgrounds. It helps me to create interventions that relieve suffering. My adaptations of historical figures and events are designed to create such a background for the protagonist. Otherwise, all characters in my story are fictional. Waking Up: An Unusual Transmigration is a perfect reading assignment for stimulating discussions in a behavioral science classroom or women’s book club.
Prologue
When Olivia meets Uri, a magical character, it challenges her existing paradigm of life. His knowledge of her unusual previous encounters contributes to Olivia’s tentative acceptance of Uri’s outrageous claims and promises. Subsequently, they develop a relationship that initiates her into the metaphysical.
Are Olivia’s experiences figments of her imagination? Has she lost her mind? Or does she experience facets of soul transmigration, also known as reincarnation or gilgul? Is her life over, or will she discover a way to integrate her subjective experiences with her objective reality? These are some of the questions she struggles with during her fantastic excursions that the reader is invited to join.
A pivotal event sheds light on the main reason for Olivia’s experiences. Options for alternate resolutions emerge, including a gender-specific intervention. This is Olivia’s story.
CHAPTER ONE
The Soulmate
"M
ay I sit at your table," a deep-timbered voice asks while Olivia is checking the e-mails on her tablet while at Starbucks. She looks up—he had appeared out of nowhere but seems familiar. His green eyes sparkle like diamonds—she senses déjà vu. He has an attractive Mediterranean appearance with bronze-toned skin. His black mid-length hair is curly-wavy with a stylish out-of-control flair. She quickly realizes that her blue eyes, fair skin, and blond shoulder length hair provide an alluring visual contrast. Opposites attract. The electromagnetic pull of emotion feels irresistible.
Sure,
Olivia responds with a smile, already distracted from reading her e-mails because he is definitely more interesting. A once ordinary coffee shop had been transformed into a setting for a magical encounter. Out of the corner of her eye, Olivia watches as he places his cup on the table and slowly sits down. The nails of his long-fingered, strong hands are well-manicured.
My name is Uri. I am your soulmate,
he says matter-of-factly. Shocked, Olivia looks up. She responds by gasping, What?
Uri nods his head a couple of times—as if what he said was normal—and reassures her in a comforting tone Yes, I really am.
Still baffled, Olivia stares at the handsome guy. Then she glances at her wedding band. A thought where Joe might be quickly flutters through her mind. Pursuing that thought would lead to a bottomless pit of speculation because there was no way to know his exact location.
Uri’s lips are berry red. Between sips, he comments, Mmm—I just love Frappuccino with mocha.
Then he puts his right elbow on the table and rests his chin in his hand. While gazing at Olivia with amusement, he waits for her reaction.
He couldn’t be real! But then, is this the Starbucks she went to twice a week? Today the atmosphere flickers with unusual specks of light, despite no sun shining through the windows. As Olivia straightens her back against the chair, she frantically explores her thoughts and options. I could get up and leave, tell him to leave, or let him talk.
