    Chapter One – Vincent

    ––––––––

There were many things a man newly released from jail could have done when put in my position. I could have gathered my things, filled my bike with gas, left the state, and started a new life. That would have been the smart thing to do. I could have sold my house and used the money to get a nice little apartment in the city and joined a construction crew that didn’t care about my criminal record. Not so favorable, but still an option, I could have gone to live with my great aunt a few counties over and been her full-time caregiver, living off her disability checks alongside her.

Instead, I had my eyes on the clubhouse.

Alec had his girlfriend Sophie give us a ride from the jailhouse to the clubhouse. She bitched the entire way that Alec needed to leave the Watchdogs; that she wouldn’t wait for him again if he were arrested, that the Watchdogs had taken enough of his life, and that none of the guys cared enough about either of us to show up to welcome us to freedom. I didn’t say a word as I stared out the window, taking in the towering evergreens that lined the road. Alec did enough talking for everyone, going on and on with his defense of the club, how they were family and were too busy keeping the businesses going to come see us. I was caught somewhere in the middle of the two. I just wasn’t the vocal type.

Sophie hardly stopped the car long enough for us to get out when we got to the clubhouse. I glanced at Alec who only shrugged his shoulders and we both had a little laugh about her reaction before he patted my shoulder, I’ve been waiting for an ice-cold beer for a long time now.

After what all we’ve been through, I may have a whole bottle of whiskey to myself.

I like the way you think, he grinned at me.

We stood there and took in the sight of the clubhouse for a minute. It was a small building, considering how many guys often crammed into its walls to drown themselves in ales and liquors. People who had never laid eyes on the building themselves might think it would be tattered and dirty, but the old thing still looked as good as it did when it was first built. The Watchdogs had always taken pride in the building that had brought all our families together. Seeing the building was like seeing a friend after a long, long time. I wondered if I missed the building and the memories it held for me more than the guys waiting inside. After all, they hadn’t bothered to see us during our time inside and didn’t even come to see us set free.

I pushed the door open and bar came to a hush, all eyes locked on us. My gaze shifted about the room looking for an open booth but before I could reach it, thin arms snaked around my ribs. I was six-foot-five and over two-hundred and fifty pounds, but Celeste McIntyre’s embrace practically crushed me.

It’s about damn time! she giggled, peering up at me. The country twang I usually found so grating fit her perfectly.

I had to keep my composure, not wanting the guys or even Celeste to know the way she got to me. She was one of only two reasons I had decided to come back to the God forsaken town.

You can say that again, I murmured, patting her back, giving her a little squeeze. You don’t have a whiskey ready for me, do you?

She rolled her eyes and let me go. I’ll be back.

Good to see you too, Cel, Alec kidded her as we both slid into the booth.

I watched as Celeste balanced a tray with a wide grin on her face. She handed me a whiskey on the rocks, Alec his typical beer order, and then presented us with a spread as lavish as a Thanksgiving. I can’t imagine what you guys have had to eat so I figured you both could use a homecooked meal. We have herb roasted chicken, twice baked potatoes, some green beans, honey cornbread, pigs-in-a-blanket, and Grandma Jimenez sent some homemade tamales and some elote.

I peered up at her out of the corner of my eye, a tad overwhelmed by the amount of food in front of me. You didn’t have to do all this, Celeste.

Don’t be an idiot, she said, leaning in and kissing Alec’s forehead and then did the same to me. I swore her lips lingered a few moments longer on me. "I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to see you guys get out. I was holding down the fort and keeping Brian and Clyde’s grubby paws off your food. Now, eat up! If you get through all that, I have
