Chapter 1. A time to ponder
On the corner of Nello St., a group of teenage boys are hanging around under a dimly lit streetlight. A black limo slowly pulls up, and the passenger in the back seat motions the driver to pull over to the side of the road. Seated in the back seat of the limo is crime boss Gino Regalo. The rear window is lowered, and he sits quietly observing the teenagers. On Nello, St. is Saint Michael's church along with three family homes.
Clotheslines stretch from one to another, with clothing
and white sheets flapping in the breeze. An elderly woman is seen from an open window cooking on her stove. The sweet aroma of fresh bread baking, meatballs, sausage drifting from the open window fills the warm summer night. Alone in his thoughts, Gino thinks back in time to his innocent childhood in the old
neighborhood. Looking over at Saint Michael's church, he recalls when he and his cousin Cosmo were altar boys there. Since those long-lost days, a lot has changed in the life of Gino Regalo. For Gino, he can only go back to those days in the memories he keeps silently in his heart.
Looking back over to the teenagers under the streetlight, he thinks about in time when a fearful boy named Simon Theodora hid behind a bush, fearing that neighborhood tough kid Nick Bandelli was heading in his direction. To Simon's greatest fear, Nick spots him. Simon was somewhat of a shy, introverted boy who did not blend in well with the other boys in the neighborhood. On one particular day, Simon tried to hide behind that very same telephone pole not to be noticed by a group of students about to pass him on their way from school. Simon knew that if one of the boys saw him, he would instantly become the butt of their jokes.
Hiding behind the pole, Simon waited patiently for the passing voices to become faint before he felt it safe to emerge and run home. Just when he thought all was safe, he felt a tap on his shoulder! It was none other than the infamous Nick Bandelli, who laughingly grabbed Simon by the seat of his pants and began to give him a free ride over his shoulders.
Nick was one of the infamous Bandelli brothers who was reported to have stayed back at least two times. He was a menacing-looking character who always had a cigarette lapped over his right ear and wore a black leather motorcycle jacket during spring, summer, winter, and fall! When it came to tough guys, Nick Bandelli and his brothers were the real deal and not to be messed with.
As Nick was making a public spectacle of Simon, a fast
approaching car headed straight for them! In the frenzy of laughing and twirling Simon, Nick was completely unaware of the imminent danger that was fast approaching. Simon screamed as loud as he could, watch out, watch out
a car! A car! Nick paid him no mind and even
