About this ebook

A secret revealed. A legacy undone. A horror immortalised.

For generations, the Berdeaux family name had been synonymous with hospitality and distinction. But that all changed in the summer of 1979, when Dewey Berdeaux's "hobby" came to light. It was a revelation that stunned the town of Barrville, and ever since then, the Berdeaux family mansion has stood as a grim reminder—with its fair share of ghosts, if rumour is to be believed.

Now, a brother and sister will bring their team of paranormal investigators to the ancestral home, seeking evidence of the supernatural. They aim to show the world there is something more beyond our passing.

But sometimes, some things are better left unseen…

    Chapter One

Even in a scanned copy of a faded photograph, the Berdeaux House was imposing. The catty-corner snapshot captured the place’s enormity, fitting the entirety of the Greek Revival structure into the photo’s frame. The picture’s light brown tinge added to the whole Southern Gothic feel of the property. It would have been a lovely home perhaps a few decades ago, before it had become this weathered shell of itself. A Tennessee sun peeked up and over its slanted roof. It cast the building into a light haze of shadow and made its darkened windows all the darker. Dirt and muck covered the broad walls of its western side, while ivy crawled up the pillars of its northern face, as though nature had been trying to swallow the house up since way back in 1979—but the house just wouldn’t have it.

From this angle, one could see the house’s wide front doors and the crumbling remnants of steps that led up to them. Beyond a few strands of cautioning police tape, one of the doors was hanging open. Like it was teasing the viewer with an invitation, a chance to see what lay beyond the pitch-black crack between the doors.
