    Chapter One

    Angelique

Angelique, did you hear a word I just said? I jumped slightly at the touch of Mrs. Flint's hand. Blinking up at her I tried to figure out what I had missed. I didn’t think so. I said I’m heading out, I’ll lock the front door on my way out, don’t stay too long tonight. You spend too much time in those books, you’re young, go live a little. Pushing my glasses back up the bridge of my nose, I gave her a sad smile. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to go out and live, I just needed to find the answers I was looking for before I could do that. She just didn’t understand, she hadn’t seen the things I had, didn’t feel the need to prove herself like I did.

I’ll try Mrs. Flint this newest acquisition might just be the key to my entire research. I found it online through an antiquities dealer in Greece, where they believe werewolves originated. This could be the breakthrough I’ve been waiting for. Mrs. Flint gave me the same exasperated look before rolling her eyes heavenward. It was the same look I’d gotten for years. I should be used to it by now, but I felt like I was close to something. I wanted to tell her to just wait and see I was going to prove her and the rest of the world wrong, but I didn’t.

Angelique, you will never find a man if all you ever do is research creatures that don’t exist. You’re missing out on the best dating years of your life, and for what, make believe. Mrs. Flint lamented. She wasn’t the only one who thought my research was ridiculous, or a waste of time, but I knew the truth. I’d known the truth for years, but no one would listen to me about that night. The night that changed everything for me, forever. The night I saw something I wasn’t supposed to see, the night I saw a man turn into a wolf. Just as my thoughts drifted back to the horrific night Mrs. Flint interrupted them.

Just make sure you don’t stay all night again at least, you about scared Beatrice half to death when she found you snoring back here last time. I tried to hide my laugh, but it came out as a snort as I remembered my co-worker screaming like a banshee was after her when she came across me sleeping in the back room of the library. It wasn’t my fault the power saving lights turned off and left me in the dark until she walked into the room.

Alright Mrs. Flint, I promise no more sleepovers. Have a good night and tell Mr. Flint I said hello, I’m sure he has your dinner ready like always. I always thought it was so cute how Mr. Flint took such good care of his wife when she worked late. I lived for the days we did inventory because he would bring food for everyone. I wanted that someday, someone who cared enough to do the little things for me. I envied Mrs. Flint, after fifty years of marriage he still made sure she knew how much he loved her.

Will do. Mrs. Flint said as she walked out towards the front doors, I could hear the locks engage as they echoed through the empty building. It gave the place an eerie feeling, being all alone in an empty building, isn’t that the beginning of like a million scary movies.

Well it looks like it's just you and me tonight. I laughed looking down at the dusty tomb I’d paid a whole week's pay for, hoping this book would be the one. The book that would solve all my unanswered mysteries from that night. Some days it felt like it was only yesterday instead of ten years ago.

I was seventeen, trying to find my way to a party that someone said was out in the woods. I found out a few days later that the assholes sent me on a wild goose chase. That’s what happened when you weren’t the pretty popular girl apparently. Instead of a party with teenagers, booze, and maybe make some questionable decisions I found a man. No, not like that, I found a man turning into a wolf. I’d tripped on a root sticking out of the ground for the millionth time and stumbled into a clearing where a small pond was illuminated by the glow of the moon and stars. It was breathtaking watching the reflection of the sky in the pond, until I saw him across the pond. From where I kneeled on the ground, I could only make out the outline of his body. At first, I wanted
