About this ebook

Valerie is eager to learn the skills needed to become a Diasodz warrior, but when she meets her new trainer, all she can think about is him.

Nolan is a master trainer who has taught thousands of fledglings throughout his life. He has never had a relationship with a student nor does he plan to.

When Nolan and Valerie are thrust together on a routine mission, nothing goes as planned. If they want to survive, they will need to trust each other. But how do you trust someone who has rejected you? Nolan and Valerie must find a way or lose each other forever.

Note: This short story is related to the Chronicles of the Diasodz series. It takes place in the early 1600s and sets the stage for a major conflict in the series. It can be read alone, but if you enjoy it, I encourage you to read the series.

    Introduction

The story you are about to read contains characters from my series, The Chronicles of the Diasodz. For those who haven’t read my series, let me give you a bit of background information to help you better understand the story.

Diasodz (DIE-uh-sodz) are beings who were created by the Goddess to heal and protect humans. They live among humans and have no special abilities until their transformation, which is called a death day. Upon this death day, many of them attain special powers or abilities. When they use their powers, the specks in their eyes move or change as they summon their powers from within. They train in healing humans if they are part of the Curatus class (healers). They train to fight Raizyn demons and deminions if they are part of the Altorus class (protectors).

Diasodz age the same as humans until their death day, which happens somewhere around their 18th birthday. Afterward, they age one year for every ten human years. This is called a life year. So, a Diasodz who has been alive for 26 human years, like Nolan, is almost 19 life years old.

This story takes place in the early 1600s in the northeast region of North America, what is currently considered Virginia. The neighboring territory, which was located along the James and Potamic Rivers, belonged to the Powhatan Indians. Diasodz existed in all cultures throughout time. Although technology did not exist, the Diasodz used runes and enchantments to create portals to their world and other locations on Earth.

Without further ado, enjoy the story…

    Chapter One

Valerie adjusted her stockings and tied them firmly above her knees. She inspected her outfit for the third time that morning. Her short-sleeved, linen top and knee-length skirt were the perfect choice for this hot summer day. She took a deep breath to calm her racing heart. Today was the day she would begin her journey as a full Diasodz.

Her mother entered the room with a coif in her hands. Valerie gathered her long brown hair and twirled it into a bun so her mother could place the head covering over her hair. She gave her a look over and nodded.

Mind your manners and do as you’re told. The trainers will expect much from you.

Valerie knew this lecture well. I know, Mama. Alex has already shared with me what to expect.

Her mother shook her head. Your sister will not be family when training, Valerie. She cannot afford to show you favoritism. Do not put her in a compromising position. Do you understand?

Yes, Mama. I will not bring shame to our family.

Her mother patted her on the cheek. Off you go now. It will serve you no purpose to be late on your first day. The removal of a partition of wood from the wall revealed a hidden rune. You need not fear. I’ve programmed the location of the camp, so you will arrive exactly where you need to be.

Valerie looked hesitantly at the symbol. She had never used a portal by herself before. Growing up, her mother had warned her that if she tried to use it on her own, she could get stuck in a black hole and never return. Now, she had no choice but to go alone. Her death day had recently come, and she no longer required supervision.

Make haste, child. I don’t have all day to wait for you. Her mother nudged her toward the portal.

She took a deep breath and pressed her palm against the rune. In the blink of an eye, it transported her to a forest. She looked the high canopy of trees and the sun’s rays streaming through the branches. The earthly smells filtered into her nose, and she relaxed her shoulders. To her right, another person appeared through the portal. Valerie sighed in relief to see a familiar face.

Hello, Hannah! I was not aware you would be here.

Hannah’s widened eyes relaxed. She nervously laughed and shrugged her shoulders. Oh, how good it is to see a familiar face!

Valerie took her hands in hers. When was your death day?

Hannah rolled her eyes. A fortnight ago, but Mother insisted I tell no one. She almost didn’t let me come. She wanted to train me herself, but Father spoke in my favor, so here I am. She placed her hands on her hips and smirked.

Shall we follow the path to the meeting place and start this new adventure together?

Hannah nodded. I’m happy you are here with me.

Valerie looped her arm through Hannah’s, and they walked together along the worn path. More people joined them. Valerie recognized a few, but most of them were strangers. She expected as much since fledglings from all over the world came to this location for training. Although the Diasodz held trainings on every continent, these trainers were known as some of the best. It made her proud that her sister was considered one of them, and she hoped one day to be on the list right next to her.
