Arcology is a complete urban vision that combines architecture and ecology. In nature, organisms evolve in complexity and become a more compact system as they evolve. A city should evolve in the same way, as if it were a living system. Why did I write this book?
The story of writing this book started on 1989, when I was a student in the Secondary School of Advanced Students.
It is remarkably like the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Schools, which are now available in many advanced countries.
STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. This term is typically used to address an education policy or a curriculum choice in schools. It has implications for workforce development, national security concerns and immigration policy.
There was a weekly class in the library, where each student is free to choose any book and read for 1 hour. The objective of the class is to encourage the students to read subjects other than the educational curriculum.
In the library, while I was looking at the books on the shelves, I noticed huge books, total of 5,000 pages in 5 parts. The books name is The Encyclopedia of Technology
, which describes everything around us, from absolute zero to semiconductors, almost every technology, at that time, was explained with colorful illustrations and simple words. I started to read the encyclopedia, and of course, I was not able to finish it in the 1-hour weekly class.
So, I convinced my father to buy the encyclopedia. My father bought all the technology tools for me in the beginning of my life, the first computer and the first technology encyclopedia, and both have a great impact on myself and my career.
I have finished the entire encyclopedia in the same summer vacation of this year, and then I started to see how the universe works and to how to apply that knowledge to everyday problems.
My passion to the technology started mor than 30 years ago and still the journey goes on.
This book is part of The Encyclopedia of Emerging Technologies
which is my attempt to give the readers the same amazing experience I had when I was in high school, but instead of 20th century technologies, I am more interested in the 21st century emerging technologies, applications, and industry solutions.
The Encyclopedia of Emerging Technologies
will consist of 365 books, each book will be focused on one single emerging technology. You can read the list of emerging technologies and their categorization by industry in the part of Coming Soon
, at the end of the book.

In every book of The Encyclopedia of Emerging Technologies
, I am trying to get instant, raw search insights, direct from the minds of the people, trying to answer their questions about the emerging technology.
There are 3 billion Google searches every day, and 20% of those have never been seen before. They are like a direct line to the people thoughts.
Sometimes that’s ‘How do I remove paper jam’. Other times, it is the wrenching fears and secret hankerings they would only ever dare share with Google.

In Robert Silverberg's The World Inside, most of the global population of 75 billion live inside giant skyscrapers, called urbmons
, each of which contains hundreds of thousands of people. The urbmons are arranged in constellations
. Each urbmon is divided into neighborhoods
of 40 or so floors. All the needs of the inhabitants are provided inside the building – food is grown outside and brought into the building – so the idea of going outside is heretical and can be a sign of madness. The book examines human life when the population density is extremely high.
Another significant example is the 1981 novel Oath of Fealty by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, in which a segment of the population of Los Angeles has moved into an arcology. The plot examines the social changes that result, both inside and outside the arcology. Thus the arcology is not just a plot device but a subject of critique.
In the city-building video game Sim City 2000, self-contained arcologies can be built, reducing the infrastructure needs of the city.

Arcology, a combination of architecture
and ecology,
is the study of architectural design concepts for densely inhabited, ecologically low-impact human settlements.
Architect Paolo Soleri coined the term in 1969, believing that a finished arcology would give space for a range of residential, commercial, and agricultural facilities while limiting individual human environmental impact. These constructions have mostly been speculative, as no arcology, even one envisioned by Soleri, has yet to be erected.
Several science fiction writers have popularized the topic. In their 1981 novel Oath of Fealty, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle described an arcology in depth. In his groundbreaking 1984 cyberpunk novel Neuromancer, where each firm has its own self-contained metropolis known as arcologies, William Gibson popularized the phrase. Recently, authors such as Peter Hamilton in Neutronium Alchemist and Paolo Bacigalupi in The Water Knife used arcologies directly in their stories. They are frequently portrayed as self-sufficient or monetarily self-sufficient.
Development
An arcology differs from a simple huge building in that it is intended to reduce the impact of human settlement on any particular ecosystem. It might be self-sustaining, relying on all or most of its own available resources to live comfortably: power, climate control, food production, air and water conservation and purification, sewage treatment, and so on. An arcology is intended to make it possible to provide those products to a broad population. In order to operate and link with other urban environments, an arcology would supply and maintain its own municipal or urban infrastructures.
Arcology has been presented as a means of reducing human effect on natural resources. Arcology designs may employ traditional architectural and civil engineering approaches
