I Want The Truth - Eva J.B.
CHAPTER ONE - WHO ARE YOU?
… … … … …
‘I would always think I would miss you even if we never met.’
… … … … …
Everything felt just fine. Every single thing, except the blazing sun rays that dangerously – and mercilessly – shone its unsolicited glory across the great New York City. The remnants of melodies from a group of singers nearby swung subtly into her chambers, getting her to hum gently along with them. Not sure she really wanted to postpone the annual rituals for her mum’s remembrance and death anniversary, Sharon Corleone almost reluctantly dressed up, put on her summer hat and left her little ‘crib’ for her mother’s graveside.
The sun rays hit her more than she expected, but the usual sights of the ‘Subway Performers’ – a popular team of musicians known for their energetic rock music by the roadside - across the street gave her the vibes and energy rush she needed to get through the thought of surviving the heat. Her feelings were affirmed by the jovial voice of her neighbour’s son, Jaden, as he throttled along firmly held by his mother’s strong hands. ‘Mama, when I go dance with them?’ ‘Very soon, honey. Okay?’, his mom answered calmly. Sharon smiled in amusement of the child’s free spirit. She had enough of her ‘front door experience’ and needed no more motivation to get started on her thirty minute long journey.
She arrived at the gates of the Catholic Reservation Funeral Home half an hour later – as expected. The flower vendor, thirty five year old Fred Santi, on sighting her from a few meters away, flashed her his usual coffee – stained – tooth smile and went on to make brisk selections of her usual bouquet choices. Before she said a word, he stretched the flowers to her like a five year old flower boy at his favourite aunt’s wedding. Sharon’s heart was touched immensely. ‘Thank you, Fred. Seven bucks, yeah?’ she asked, gently holding the flowers with one hand and patting her jean pockets with the other in search of her wallet. ‘Oh, you could have it for just five, in fact.’ Sharon threw him a quick gaze to ensure it was not a sarcastic gesture. He was unbothered. ‘I should say HAPPY ANNIVERSARY too. It’s three years already and Bennita must be proud of how well you are getting along, but Fred’s face said it all. He meant what he said and capped it all when he gave her an unexpected pat on the shoulder, assuring her that this was more than a random customer service strategy. Teary and flushed with fresh memories of her mother’s painful exit, she advanced into the compound. Her mother’s grave seemed to be as green as it was the last time she came and it made her happy she sat by the stone
