LOSING IT

No one understands me, I grumble to my best friend, Kevin Adams, who sits there at my desk while I lounge on my back on my single bed, a stuffed giraffe pressed against my eyes.

I understand you, Kevin says.

I remove the giraffe from my face, raising my head from the pillows to peer at him on the other side of the small bedroom. His expression is strangely solemn, his dark eyes intense, like he is angry or something. I allow my head to flop back down on the pillow, and stare up at the ceiling.

Thanks, but you don’t count.

Oh, wow, thanks a lot, he moans. "Nice to know what you really think of me."

I sit up, weirdly confused. He sounds genuinely put out, which is ridiculous. I mean, how can I offend the unoffendable? This is Kevin we’re talking about here, and I love him like a brother – if I had any siblings to compare this platonic love to, which I don’t. We bitch and moan and insult each other, that’s just what we do.

You know what I mean, I say, shuffling backwards on the bed so that my back snuggles into the fortress of pillows and cuddly toys I simply don’t have the heart to throw out. I know you understand me, that goes without saying. You understand me better than anyone in the whole wide world.

So you’re saying that you take me for granted, now?

But he says it with a ghost of a smile, so he can’t be that pissed at me. Even so, he’s acting really weird.

What’s gotten into you today? You seem a little… I pause, searching for the right word, because I’m not entirely sure what he’s being. Cold? Distant? Angry? Off, I finish lamely.

"There is nothing wrong with me, Belinda Harris, I’m not the one who was expelled from university for lewd conduct, remember?"
