Understanding Motivation
The possibility that we may fail in the struggle should not deter us from supporting a cause we believe to be just.
—Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth
President of the United States
Researchers over the years believe that people who routinely maintain a positive mental attitude may enjoy many benefits including these.
• Increased lifespan
• Lower rates of depression
• Lower levels of distress
• Greater resistance to the common cold
• Better psychological and physical well-being
• Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
• Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress
What Is Motivation?
Motivation is a powerful, intense force that drives a person forward toward a given goal. Then, how do you define motivation?
Steven Pressfield, in his book, The War Of Art, explains motivation this way:
At some point, the pain of not doing it becomes greater than the pain of doing it."
I believe that there is a driving force to accomplish certain things by people. Perhaps it may be a task such as cleaning out the garage, which may have been neglected for some time.
The person may work an entire day at cleaning and arranging that garage. They may not stop until the goal is achieved. That is motivation, maintained throughout with a positive mental attitude.
We’ve all have had times when we rise to do extraordinary things that may even surprise ourselves. Sometimes I believe that the driving force may come from a moment of pure dissatisfaction. I call it: Inspirational Dissatisfaction. A time when we reach our limit about a certain occurrence and are determined, beyond all means, to change or modify that negativity in our life.
I have had such occurrences when I have misplaced an important document in my office. The office, at that time, was in a very disrupted state.
So, as with the upset individual who cleans out and organizes the garage all day, I too become consumed with organizing and cleaning up my office until I locate the elusive missing document. This is intense motivation. We all have it within ourselves to do extraordinary things, but only when we are highly driven to do so.
Your New Best Friend
I am your new best friend. Yes, you are reading me in some form, but remember this—I am your new best friend. A self-help book is your new best friend because it speaks to you as you listen and try to accept what is being communicated. This self-help work will listen to you, as your struggles, no matter how large or small, have been struggles uncovered through the ages.
We all have had difficulties in life—not enough money, success, satisfaction, appreciation, or someone who will listen to us. I hear you loud and clear. I have heard your voice before, in countless others with similar difficulties. But guess what? I am here to help. I will help you to help yourself.
You don’t have to change or accept anything. You can merely read what I say for entertainment. But those of you who wish to make changes, even small ones, will benefit tremendously by applying thoughts and words and inspiration throughout this book.
I am your new best friend. Accept me, accept change, accept that EVERYONE can improve something in their lives. Let’s make beautiful music together, shall we?
The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.
Tommy Lasorda, Major League baseball manager
"The opportunity to secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands."
Sun Tzu Chinese general, military strategist
There Is Greatness within You
There is greatness within you! You may not believe that statement, but it is true. We each were born to succeed in anything we choose to do. It is our adult, modified thinking that convinces us that there are many things we cannot, shouldn’t, can’t possibly do.
You may remember when you were young, when we all thought we could conquer the world. We believed with all of our hearts that we would succeed at anything. The trouble is, we needed to focus on specific goals and dreams, and not be pulled into the false assumption that we can excel in everything at once.
Picture a scratch-off lottery ticket. You are holding it in your hands. With a coin, you start scratching off ¾ of the ticket. It’s not a winner just yet, but you still tear it up and throw it in the air. You believe it cannot win, yet you left off ¼ of the numbers. You will never know if you won. Would you do such a thing? I’m sure you wouldn’t.
Yet, we do this in our very own life dreams and goals. We give up way too soon. You are already holding the winning hand in life; don’t throw the cards in the air and walk away!
You are the greatest success in the world. Your being born was a truly amazing miracle, which can never be duplicated. You are one of a kind. You are already a billionaire, just by being alive. You have beat all the odds already, by just surviving; don’t you dare ignore your dreams now!
Scratch off those remaining numbers, and become the incredible success you were born to be. You are fine cream, and cream always rises to the top.
The difference between men is in energy, in the strong will, in the settled —purpose, and in the invincible determination.
—Vince Lombardi, American football coach
Understanding the Benefit of the Edge
Do you want to win? Do you want to excel in business and in life? Do you want to rise above others in your field? Or are you satisfied in your present position and status in life? There are no right or wrong answers here.
We receive back in life, in direct proportion to what we have invested in a given job, life situation, even in love.
Everyone cannot be an Edison, Ford, Jeff Bezos, or Elon Musk. We can, though, be the greatest success we are each capable of being if we genuinely want it badly enough. Do you want it? Can you feel it in your bones? Is it something that is seared into your brain? Is it the first thing you think about in the morning and the last thing you think about at night? Or is it just merely strong desire?
Tremendously successful people have a big edge over others. Some are bigger in size, wealthier, smarter, stronger, and even better looking. Those can be edges, of course. Then there are those individuals who are exactly the same as you and I but possess a large edge. They worked, or studied to gain such an edge.
In a casino, the house has the edge in gambling. It is a well-known fact. Depending on the game of choice, the casino has an advantage over time. In Blackjack it could be 2%; in Roulette it could be 5%. So we know that over the long-term span, the casino will make money.
Their other games of chance may have more of a percentage in their favor. This is the special edge they have. Sports players also have edges, besides their possible size and talent. A pitcher, for instance, has had scouts do a great deal of research on opposing players. The pitcher knows in advance what is the batter’s strengths and weaknesses, and works toward the batter’s weakness.
The same holds true in card games, chess, and all other sports. There are also individuals that can secretly count cards, which is a talent learned by some well-seasoned card players. This gives them a clear edge in Poker, Blackjack, and many other card games. In fact, it is not looked upon favorably by casinos if they find out that you have been using a card counting system to beat them in casino card games.
So, why not get an edge in your own life? It means investing, as do all professionals that achieve an edge in life. Investing in yourself. Even a magician has an edge over us when showing us a magic trick. The hand is quicker than the eye, or some other method of deception that we cannot seem to grasp hold of. In any event, the magician will usually fool us every time.
In stock trading, there are investors who always seem to win. Some are considered day traders. The key to their success or edge as I refer to it, is research, studying a given set of stocks, and carefully choosing which ones to invest in, and usually for short periods. They do not merely guess in the blind. That would not be considered an edge.
You, too, can have an edge, but it means working hard at getting that certain percentage better than others. Are you willing to do this? A bodybuilder who works out regularly has the edge over someone who never works out when they have an arm-wrestling competition. My money will be on the bodybuilder every time.
In life today, most people find it too much work to study in-depth in their own industry, whatever it may be. There are many that don’t read to improve themselves in their job or life on a regular basis. There are many that don’t work on the power of their minds and improving their attitudes, which in the long term will give them a tremendous edge in business, life, and even in love.
Why is this so? Because it is easier not to invest precious time into the things that will not give immediate gratification. People who are genuinely driven in their goals and dreams will overcome that obstacle.
Start improving yourself by reading a self-help book each month and then reread them all the next year. You will be training your mind just as bodybuilders consistently train their bodies.
Remember the bodybuilder, they must work at it every day to maintain that physique. It does not happen overnight, and if neglected, they will get muscle atrophy.
Positive affirmations, or as I sometimes refer to as self-suggestion statements, are something that must be practiced
