    Chapter one

    AVERELLA

I SAT AND stared out the window, into the world beyond, to the white-gold buildings in the city. The bright yellow and silver colors mixed with other colors until my eyes watered. It was a strange world—and it wasn’t mine. My world lay somewhere else, somewhere distant and broken. The glare of the white-blue light of this world’s sun beaded through the window, reflecting off the glass. Despite that it made my eyes burn, I didn’t move or look away.

I’d rather stare at it than watch the battered and incapacitated body lying on the bed behind me.

My stomach twisted as I fought against images of everything that had happened in the past—how long had it been since I had first gotten thrown in Zagerah? Three months? Longer?

As if taunting me, the images slammed against my thoughts in a fury, and with them—memories.

The Gredi as they arrested my brother, me allowing them to take me to Zagerah so I could find him, walking through the miles and miles of land inside the prison, running with the other prisoners, running from the Hunters, being chased through darkness and dense thick trees with shadows all around us, Wexx’s death, bodies lying in the river, the labs, seeing the very place where the Hunters were created, Municx telling us a story of his son, me learning that my brother had been killed by someone I loved, the lies, the game I’d been a pawn in…

    Jared.

How long are you just gonna sit there and stare? I flinched at the voice that came from the door behind me. I knew it belonged to Sine without even looking.

Until I know he’ll be okay. My voice sounded hoarse in my own ears.

Radon says he should pull through.

I didn’t respond; just tightened my arms closer to my chest, as if that movement could hold back all the fears that ate away at me.

Days went by like centuries. Agonizing time passed as I sat there and continued watching the gold and the sun and the light and the people who weren’t oppressed or suffering. All the while, I suffered, waiting for the love of my life to wake up or…

It took five days before Jared finally awakened. The bandage over his eyes kept me from seeing if they had opened, but he stirred, and then flinched, whether from pain or something else, I didn’t know.

W—where am I? Who…? Zagerah? His jaw and fists clenched, despite how much pain that must have brought him, and he tried to sit up.

He had sat all the way up before I put my hands on his shoulders. He winced and started to pull away. Jared—Jared, calm down. It’s me—Averella.

His muscles relaxed, and he lay back down, but his fists stayed clenched. Did Zagerah control me again? How did he survive?

I grimaced, whether because of the memory or due to his injuries I didn’t know. I realized that he must have assumed that he couldn’t see because we’d tied something around his eyes.

I wished so desperately it had been that simple.

He was a Hunter—lethal assassins who had once been human, killers created in the Aretul’s labs. The Aretul wiped their memories, and somehow, they’d been given powers and abilities beyond what any human could ever be capable of. Their only job was to chase and kill the prisoners inside Zagerah under the orders of their leader. Jared had turned against the Hunters to protect me—to protect all of us. His power and ability dealt with his eyes—he could see through solid objects and even into people’s thoughts and minds. With that power, came a strength, something he could use as a strength, and one weakness—also with his eyes. Anytime he couldn’t see, his ability,
