Summary of Better off Dead Reacher Jack - Justin Reese

The stranger got into position under the streetlight at 11:00 p.m., as agreed. It was easy to find, just like he'd been told it would be. He stood six feet shy of the jagged metal fence that separated the U.S. from Mexico. I make a deal, I stick to it. You want the money, tell me where Michael is.

The deal's changed. Take it or leave it. The driver reached behind his back and took a pistol from his waistband. He then drove his left fist into the guy's side. The stranger retrieved the driver's fallen gun and carried him over to the hood of the car.

You got lucky once. That won't happen again, he said to the driver. He saw the three guys swap furtive glances, but they didn't move. Walk away while you still can, the stranger says to the shorter guy. Say we break your legs?.

The taller guy licks his lips. You'd never walk again. Not without a cane. He passes one to the taller guy and the pair go back to the car. The taller guy jabbed at the stranger's gut, using the ax handle like a spear.

He jabbed a second time, hoping to back the stranger off. And he missed. But this time something else saved him. The fact that he was the last of his crew left standing. The stranger arrived at the compound at 8:00 p.m., three hours early, and searched every inch of the compound.

He was certain no one had been hiding, then. A silhouette broke free from the darkness. It was a woman. Project went on for years and left a permanent mark on the area. The town split in two like a cell, multiplying greedily.

Both halves flourished. Dr. Houllier had been on duty since the small hours of the morning. He was responsible for everything from delivering babies to treating colds to diagnosing cancer. He wrote his notes longhand, using a format he'd developed himself. It left no electronic trace for anyone to ever recover.

Dr. Houllier checked his watch, then worked the lever that opened the center door of the meat locker. Another man walked in - he looked a little like Perky, but with straighter hair and a bland way of moving. This one was all about power and brutality. Pure and simple. He'd been shot before, Dr. Houllier said.

I can guarantee that. Dendoncker pointed at a set of scars on the other side of the guy's chest. And there's that. The scar on his abdomen looked like some kind of sea creature. Dr. Houllier handed Dendoncker Reacher's passport in a Ziploc bag. It's old, but it's a match, he said. Maybe he wasn't looking for Michael. It's a good job that crazy bitch killed him.

    Chapter 2

Dr. Houllier met the woman with the limp two days earlier. She was in a Jeep that looked like it was Vietnam War era. A fair chunk of rubber was now streaked across the blacktop from where she'd skidded on an icy road. I found a woman slumped over the steering wheel of a Jeep. She was facing down, into the footwell, and completely inert.

I reached for her neck and homed in on her carotid. She sat up and pointed
