    The Sociopath - Aditi Solanki

    Chapter 1

    Know Them

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA, there was a school named North Cedar Rapids High School. There, a student named Lucas Irving came. He had eyes like blue bell, his hair was dark black and he always had a faint smile on his face. He was a student from Saitama, Japan, but he was American. With a studentship, he wanted to continue his studies here, in USA. In this school, students were taught Spanish. He wasn’t accustomed with Spanish as a language; he quite knew English and Japanese. It was not good for him because the school that he had come to, Spanish was taught as the main language and English was taught as a subordinate language. In his class there was an Indian student who had dark brown eyes which were mistaken for black eyes and he was a brunette. His name was Samarth Rakish Kumar, others usually called him Sam Spark, and he was like the bandit of the class. It was like that he was ruthless in every drop of his blood. He wasn’t always like this; he changed when he came to USA, just like any other typical kid who had migrated with his parents to USA. But everything changed for him as on his first day, he was bullied in so many different ways, like for instance; getting beaten up in the hallways, money being taken from his wallet without his permission, throwing his bag here and there, stuffing him in the lockers and in many more ways. He never wanted to go to back to that school again and never wanted to have a glimpse of that dreadful school ever again, where he was bullied so horribly. But when he came the next day to school it was like he had risen up like a phoenix or he was reborn because he was not scared anymore of those whom had bullied him the day before. When those bullies tried to approach him, he gave them a nice abusive talk. When one of them tried to punch him in the face, he fought back and almost took the life out that boy Because of all this, he was almost expelled, he wasn’t because he was one of the brainy ones. That day, he got a nice lecture from his parents. He wasn’t happy about it at all because he never started any of it and thus, from the next day none of the bullies tried to bully him ever, but when someone else was bullied, he never cared but when someone tried to infuriate him he just humiliated them in such a way that no one could stand for even a second elongated in front of him.

Lucas met a boy named Near Rivers while he was looking for the Principal’s office, Near was a red head and his eyes were of light brown colour, he also had a mole on his left cheek. They became good friends straightaway and they even got to know that they both were partners in their P.E. class.

‘Well, well’, a sound came frombehind of Lucas during his P.E. class.

    It was Mark Stone and his friends Theodore Greene and Leonard McAdams, Mark was a spoiled brat and Leonard as well. Mark was a brunette with blue eyes;

Theodore too was a brunette with brown eyes and Leonard was a blonde with green eyes.

But Theodore was a nobleman on the outside, which was a show for other people to see and so they saw it but on the inside he was as cruel as grave, ‘Seems like new, there’s a new kid in the school today’, said Theodore.

‘I guess that it’ll be fun if we make fun of him and make him feel bad about himself’, said Mark.

Near tells Lucas, ‘Don’t hear them out; they are just bullies and its better if we stay away from them’.

Later on in the class, Lucas introduced himself to everyone during the break in P.E. class. Then Lucas and Near had a chat.

‘To be honest, I am not at all good at sports.’ ‘You’ll get better, no worries! Okay my friend?’

Afterwards, Lucas tries to get on the rope but failed and after failing in the attempt climbing up the rope for the next 6 times, Mark and his friends came over and made fun of Lucas for the next five to six minutes and now a rhetorical question arose that will Lucas stay calm after all this humiliation or not but that was not what was going to happen.

So, when his reputation that was yet to be made was halfway trashed by them, he laughed or one may say that he giggled on them and spoke, ‘Okay are you people a bit unstable, cause I can’t ignore the fact that you aren’t, cause if you’re, I won’t mind a single word you all say, cause you know that…’, he looks at them for a moment and said in a sarcastic tone, ‘Oh! Dear god you don’t know, well that explains your behaviour and yeah well your kind of people isn’t supposed to be told that because then they get more….’ Lucas was interrupted.

‘So, what are you trying to conclude by saying all this?’ Mark asks to Lucas.

‘I guess you should stop all this because they will take their revenge’, said Near to Lucas.

‘What, why are you scared of these bunch of awkward teenagers. So, where were we? Ah! Yes, you still don’t understand, so let me get this easy for you people, you’re Mark right? As per your behaviour it seems like that you have some parent issues, so that’s why you vent out your frustration on others in form of bullying cause you sure can’t vent it out on your parents and you must be Theodore right? You seem to be the calmer one; you don’t like your mother much, do you? But you indeed love your father, no, no you loved him, sorry my humble affection is with you, but it’s not good to think that his death was because of your mother. So, this is getting awkward. Anyway moving on, you must be Leo, don’t be surprised I heard your name while you were talking over with your friends, so you must be’, Lucas was interrupted again.

‘Can’t you all just not fight for once and you’re Lucas, right, yes, it’s your first day in this school, so, don’t make foes all over the place and you are last time spared for this kind behaviour and next time if I get this sort of behaviour from you again, you’ll directly go to the principal’s office and now you should be punished so I’ll decide your detention, so am I clear? Am I? ‘ Said Mr. Newt Campbell the P.E. instructor.

    ‘Yes sir’, replied Lucas.

‘So let’s get back to our work shall we?’

‘I’ll show you around the campus and in no time you’ll know each and every place over here and act like you’re a student who has spent at least two years here’, said Near to Lucas.

‘Did I say too much to them?’

‘No… n…. yes, yes you said too much.’ ‘I’m toast and dead meat, right?’

‘Yup you’re dead meat and toast, save yourself please, I don’t want you to be dead.’

    Chapter 2

    The Follower

It had been more than 2 months since Lucas’ arrival at school. The final for men and women soccer tournament was around a month away. Irene Walker was the captain of the women soccer team of the school. She was a brunette with green eyes. Mark and Theodore were in the men’s team. Well, Theodore was the captain of the team and he was admired and adored by everyone because he was the best in his game but Mark was better than him and everyone knew that but Mark never knew because other people didn’t want to create any problem between their friendship by telling him. Theodore came to become the captain because his mother Melanie Greene was the principal of the school. And for Lucas, there was no chance that he could’ve been in the team. After a week of the tournament, everyone decided to go for two days of camping.

‘I am feeling very awkward because it’s been more than two months and Mr. Campbell has not given me any detention yet and I’m scared that the punishment will be very awkward’, said Lucas to Near.

‘Don’t be scared. I think that he has forgotten about your punishment till now. So, act like you’ve got no problems because you’re psychic man, it’s like you can tell whatever the person in front of you is thinking and that is very cool and see you’ve been able to save yourself from Mark and their gang because of your powers’.

‘I’ve told you a hundred , no, a thousand times that I’m not a psychic but I am just good at examining other people on the basis of the way they speak, sit and many other things that I deduce about them and then only can I tell about them, okay.’

With a laugh, Near said to Lucas, ‘I love to irritate you by calling you a psychic again and again and its even fun like when you know that your friend will explain this to you again and again and so you speak it again and again.’

‘So next class is P.E., wish me luck so that he says nothing today and has forgotten ‘bout the incident completely.’

‘No one is going to save you today from his punishment and I guess that he’ll tell you about the punishment today.’

‘How do you know, have you become a psychic?’ ‘Call it a hunch.’

And then they both laughed for a while.

They both went for the P.E. class later on, the entire time of the class Lucas was worried about the punishment and then Mr. Campbell called up for him at the end of the class.

‘So, do you remember what I told you in my first class with you’, Mr. Campbell asks Lucas.

‘Yes sir, I do remember about my punishment’.

‘So you know that there’ll be the finals for men and women soccer tournament and for that I want attractive and motivational banners and I heard that you’re indeed good in drawing so you’re going to make the banners and stuff and this is going to be half of your punishment. You can take help of your friends if you want and some children of the art club and we’ll talk about rest of your punishment after you complete this work. Don’t delay the work, start working from tomorrow because you know that it’s important to finish it before time.’

‘So I’m going to make posters about motivation for those students who just want to degrade my personality down in front of the whole school, Hmm… that’s just good.’

‘Yeah, I always liked your sense of humor, now go chop-chop.’

Next day, early in the morning, before dawn, Lucas was coming from his home to school to start working on the banners for the tournament, he was walking alone by the sidewalks when he was attacked by someone along the way to school and when he got up, he blacked out because of the attack. He had been an hour late for school. The money in his wallet was stolen, so as he was already so late for school, he decided to skip school for a day because he even had a headache and then after on his way back to home, he reported the incident in the police.

Next day, when he went back to school, Near asked Lucas, ‘Where were you yesterday, why didn’t you come to school?’

‘Someone attacked me behind my back, took my wallet and blacked me out for about an hour or so I guess.’

‘You were also attacked on your way to school?’ ‘What? Was someone else also attacked in this way, tell me who was attacked besides me because I want to know who the hell took my wallet and the candy bars from my backpack.’

‘I think that Theodore was attacked in the same way (then they walk down the hallway and Near speaks in a soft tone) and well he doesn’t carry a wallet but credit cards, so….’, he stopped speaking and gave a big pause and Lucas kept staring at him for a while and made a curiousface or one could say that he needed the next following words to be said right away.

‘Huh, so, so what happened? Can you explain a little bit more and not stop in between like it’s a daily soap opera, just get to the point, would you?’

‘I like to say it in this way because it’s the only time I can be a bit dramatic.’

‘Oh man! Get to the point already, by the way, next time try to act in a much more better way and yes, finish the very sentence after so, please, can do that for me’, said Lucas in an irritated tone.

‘So nothing, he just wasn’t able to find the burglar responsible for this crime’, he replies with a bit of humor.

‘I am not angry on you at all. Because of that mugger or so help me god I would’ve ripped your heart out of your chest right now’, Lucas said in a horrific tone.

Near watches Lucas with horror for a while and said, ‘Man you scared the hell out of me.’

He looked at Lucas once again and he was horrified for the rest of his day because of that horrifying glimpse of Lucas.

Lucas got the art club members to start with the work of making ‘motivational’ banners for the school tournament of soccer. He didn’t want to talk with those students of the art club because he was still new in the school, so he got his friend Near to work for him too. At the end of the school, everyone left but Lucas and Near stayed to finish the work left for the day.

‘So are we done now Lucas? I don’t think that I am any kind of an artist more than a first grade student, so could you just let me go now and I’m cold too so I’m going to take ‘thee’ jacket of yours’, said Near to Lucas with the discomfort of the work he was assigned to do by his dearest friend about which he had no knowledge.

‘I know that you aren’t any sort of artist but as I am here to complete my colourful yet utterly lone detention, I needed someone to entertain me, so for that, I made you stay here and please take ‘thee’ jacket of mine and get back to work now’, Lucas replies in a sarcastic tone.

Near mockingly replies, ‘I wanted someone to entertain me and get back to work.’

‘Mock me, because whatever this all is, it entertains me a lot,
