    Chapter 1

    Third Time’s the Charm

O ur team sucked. Keisha kicked at the gravel as she walked. Like a thousand leeches sucked.

We followed the subdued crowd of our classmates out of the football stadium to the cheers of the other team’s fans. By halftime, even our cheerleaders had sat down on the bench.

It wasn’t that bad. I tried for a more hopeful tone. We recovered that fumble.

Faye. My bestie threw out her hands. We got intercepted on the next play. With Jet’s hand broken, our guys don’t stand a chance at regionals.

I pulled my jacket closer against the cold—cold that had somehow seeped past my ribs.

Sorry, Keisha mumbled. I know guys are a sore spot right now.

    Just the one guy.

Still, she was right. We’d had little hope for a win, but the scoreboard reading 42-0 was more evidence that our once-championship team was a disaster.

    Also, jerk.

Five minutes later, Keisha pulled up to my curb and cocked her head toward my house. What’s up?

A collection of shiny vehicles in the driveway signaled the whole family was here—my three grown sisters, Farah, Faith, and Fawn, their husbands, and probably my two nieces, Meilynn and Alice.

I don’t know. A tickle ran down my neck, and somehow landed in my stomach with a thud.

    No telling with your family.

Our clan tends to gather when there’s news. But was it good news or bad news?

Keisha peered past me at the windows, lit but curtained. I wish I could go in with you and find out.

That was a wish Keisha wouldn’t get. She’d been my best friend for four years but hadn’t
