Percy Ann’s Great Escape

In June 1958 I excitedly rode my bike over to Croghan School to meet our playground supervisor for the summer. The Department of Recreation in Fremont, Ohio, offered all sorts of summer activities and hired college girls studying to become teachers to oversee them. The playground supervisors were friendly and upbeat and wore whistles around their necks.

Our supervisor had a bulletin board to sign up for activities like the Croghan Tigers peewee softball team. There was also a calendar with the days and times for crafts, contests and shows.
