Chapter 1

Pale Man

If my junior year was a newspaper, college fair might have warranted a few lines on Section D, page 12. Flashy booths lined the perimeter of the gym, with school colors, slick brochures, and staff smiles swarming the high school. Kirsten and I had each gathered a stack of reading materials from a slew of universities, only half of which I’d heard of before.

I can’t believe it, Kirsten said. They don’t offer a degree in international relations. She sputtered out a frustrated sigh and flipped another brochure onto the trash pile at her feet.

Yep, I answered. Unbelievable. My tone fell somewhere between disinterested and
