As David and Claire try to enjoy the New Year's celebration in New York, David must come to the aid of those in peril once again. This turns his time to enjoy the celebrations with Claire up-side-down, as he races to rescue those in peril and accept a reward for soing so. his hopes for a relaxing time to enjoy bringing in the new year becomes a busy time in Times Square.

 

An assasination attempt on the first female President forces Maxx to play bodyguard and keep her safe. David works with the FBI on a case they are struggling with because the perps are using their abilites to avoid capture. When Maxx gets too close he is overwhelmed with the new abilities he is adopting at the same time and becomes the next person needing rescue.

I am far from your normal writer. Most of my life I spent doing physically demanding repetitive tasks to earn a living. That is until I became medically discharged from the working world.  I took up creative writing on my own after having a re-occouring dream that gave me the inspiriation for something to write about. Who knew that it would lead to a multi-volume book series.  I had a great deal of fun writing this series, and my hopes are that the readers have as much enjoyment reading it as I had writing it.

Hero Business

One Saturday morning , David sprung out of bed in a cold sweat like a spring being released from its tension. He hurried in the dark while changing from his nightclothes, into the street clothes he had laid out for the next day.

Claire was startled by David's instant leap from bed. Another vision of the future babe? She asked with a worried tone, hoping it wasn't something to do with their impending family matters.

Yes, honey. But not to worry, it's something I really need to talk over with the team. I just have to work out how and what for a little while. He replied trying to ease her mind.

What's it about? Maybe I can help you figure it out, like in the past. She offered her assistance as she wrapped her bathrobe around herself.

They went into the kitchen and started the brew cycle on the coffee maker. Claire pulled some muffins out for a snack while they talked.

You know those bracelets we are making for the baby and myself so that our tears won't cause people to wither away and die? David asked her.

She nodded in remembering the meeting about what the family did to get the instructions on how to make and program the bracelets.

Well last night I had another vision, but it wasn't about our family. The vision was about people with abilities breaking the law and the police not being able to contain them or arrest them because they were using their abilities to either cause others harm or escape from capture. It was total anarchy, and even I couldn't do anything to stop it because there were too many of them. David introduced his dream to her.

Claire came up behind David and hugged him. As horrible as that sounds at least you can program those nasty bracelets quickly to prohibit someone from using their abilities.

Yes but we only have a few for our daughter, and we're going to need more from the vision I've just had, David replied sadly.

Which means we'll have to find some way of mass-producing them without programming them like the RAT facility, Claire added. But who could we trust enough to do that without making it into something that could bring you to your knees?

They pondered it over for a while over a few cups of coffee, and many crumpled sheets of paper only to come up with two names that were trustworthy with David's identity, and also somewhat unhappy with their current occupation. Nikki, and Derek.

Nikki worked in the formal dress shop in town and even though she made a decent hourly wage, she was unhappy about not being able to help Ron save up for the house fund they were trying to build. Derek on the other hand just didn't want to take over the family's limousine business. He had other brothers and sisters that wanted to run the business after their parents retired from it.

We'll have to talk it over with the entire group David, Claire told him. Best not to show any kind of favoritism within the group. The others may feel like you are giving Nikki and Derek a hand up over the rest of them. Especially Beth and Steve. Even though they have their own photography business, they may feel like you are favouring Derek and Nikki over them.

I know, babe, but what we have to find out is if they are interested in this or not. If they don't want to do it, we're back to square one and have to find someone that can be trusted not only with this technology but, with my identity as well. He replied solemnly.

Over the next few hours of the very early morning, they talked about the pros and cons of what they needed to get done. They already had the blueprints and technical readouts for making the bracelets, they just needed a way to announce it to the whole group. Neither of them had to work that day, so time was on their side as long as David didn't get called away in the suit.

They ate their breakfast and cleaned up after themselves, got dressed, sent out the messages for a meeting for everyone to show up at their place that night for a meeting about their problem. Charlie was at the Police Academy, so his absence was expected. Patty was going to be about a half-hour late because she was working at the hospital that Joseph and Nancy worked at in the Emergency Triage room. Peter and Mary Gutridge's schedules were tight through the day but would need transportation to and from the meeting to attend, to which David was more than happy to oblige.

For the rest of the day leading up to the meeting, David and Claire were busier than bees in the kitchen preparing a variety of bite-sized munchies for the group coming over. Both of their parents showed up a couple of hours ahead of the meeting time to assist with any last-minute preparations. Harry brought the documents they gathered from the RAT facility as requested by David. Harry also had brought the 25 bracelets he had already made with him over the last couple of years for David to apply when the baby is born.

David, what do you think about making a prison cell with this technology? Karl asked just out of the blue.

That would be a good idea on one hand but I would have to either keep going back to re-program the cell or teach someone I don't know how to program it for me. That could create some problems down the road for me if you know what I mean. David replied. But it is something to think about for when I decide to retire from the force or get a higher promotion away from the precinct. Either way, it's something we can discuss with the group.

David received a text from Peter telling him that they were ready to be picked up. With a kiss goodbye from Claire, he was gone.

Peter made it clear to his aides that Maxx Pseudo was not a risk to his safety, and any business he had with Maxx was to remain as private as the most sacred national secrets. Peter also told them that Maxx was coming to pick him up and bring him back right in the Oval Office, and not to bother him while he was gone.

Peter and Mary were waiting at the edge of the desk for him to appear. With David's abrupt appearance still being semi-new to the pair they were startled a bit, but happy to see him all the same.

David walked up to them and placed a hand on each of their shoulders and in an instant, they were standing on the back deck of David's house in Oklahoma.

David's Aunts and Uncles were the next to arrive in the same manner as David did with Peter and Mary. Startling as it was they just went through the greetings like old friends. As more of the intended guests arrived the back deck was getting full. All of David and Claire's friends from school, William and Vicky, Roger, Brad and Lauren, Stephanie and Richard showed up almost in a convoy of cars. When Captain Barnes and Commissioner Flanagan showed up and saw Peter, they both saluted with looks of query on their faces of how the President is involved with the discussions dealing with Maxx Pseudo.

Peter saluted back and told them for future reference that if it is something to deal with Maxx, the need to salute is not necessary. When Patty texted David that she was home, David teleported over to get her and bring her to the meeting. After all the greetings were done and introductions made for the newest members of the team, David introduced the reason for bringing them all together in such haste.

Last night I had a vision of the future again. But this time it wasn't about our family, friends or anything like that. This time it was about me on the force. In the future I saw, people with abilities come out and some were good, some were terrorizing the cities. I know this is partially my fault for coming out as I have, but between Claire and I this morning we've come up with a way to ease the devastation this may bring. David paused to show them the vision he had.

We need to protect ourselves against these people. Captain Barnes jumped to a conclusion. Like even in the vision David is overwhelmed by their abilities. If he can't stop them nobody can!

Relax Barnes! Commissioner Flanagan said. David said he has a way of stopping this we need to hear him out fully. Otherwise, we'll all just be as helpless as newborns with this happening.

Thanks, Commissioner! David replied. Claire and I racked our heads together this morning about the bracelets that Dad started making for our baby. David stopped to show the visions he had about the baby that cries and everyone dies, and how they have something to stop this from happening.

These bracelets, when programmed properly, will interrupt the person's ability from being used. Each unit can only be programmed to restrict the use of one ability. I made the four in this case for David and his daughter. The rest of these I made thinking the worst might happen. Harry introduced. I don't have the time during planting or harvest seasons to make the numbers you are going to need if you use them for police protection. That is why we are having this meeting.

Well, then we need to find someone who can make those things. Barnes piped up.

I think they already have, Peter said calmly.

Of everyone here, most of you are happy with your career choices. Claire stood up and delivered. We would like to know if Nikki and Derek want to take this on as a business venture together. Claire smiled. With all of our support as well.

We know that starting your business for you looks like we are favouring the two of you over everyone else, but we couldn't figure anyone else that is trustworthy enough to build these things with the proper motives. David jumped in. We'd be more than happy to give Beth and Steve the same amount of money for their photography business. And if Ron and Lizzy wanted to start a business of their own in their fields we'd be more than happy to help out too.

Consider half the costs of the business expenses taken care of David, courtesy of the United States of America. Peter stepped in. This is for national and international security and the well-being of mankind. My party reps will be thrilled to give you all the resources required to get this project up and running at your earliest time.

Barnes looked shocked that the President would just instantly hand over the keys to a brand new business idea so quickly. It became very obvious to him that Peter Gutridge trusted David impeccably. Commissioner Flanagan just sat there taking it all in stride as if he was soaking up all the information like a sponge. He was more of a reserved man than Barnes was, because Barnes was still trying to climb the ladder at the precinct and, Flanagan was content where he was at.

Derek and Nikki looked at each other with shocked expressions. They were being offered a business of their own, with a product that was already tested and proven to work, and the best ongoing customer that any marketing guru would want to have, the government.

First thing you'll have to do is learn to make them. Karl pointed out. David is the only one who should be in charge of programming them as he needs them.

Both Derek and Nikki were looking for ways out of their current occupations but never thought about joining into a business together. They were good friends and had been for many years. They both had the eagerness to make a go of this project, mostly because all of the leg work had been done for them, it was just a matter of making sure that David had enough to use when he needed them. They agreed to pick up where Harry left off with making the inhibitors.

Harry told them that in their free time from work they should come by the farm and he would teach them how to make the bracelets as he had found a process to make assembly easier for himself.

For the next few hours, the group discussed and planned out how the new business for Derek and Nikki would work best for them. Peter added a side note that David was to contact him directly about financing options from the government for the production aspects of the business. Anything it takes from raw materials, components, and patents, just give me a text and I'll have the funding to get them up and going soon pushed through congress and a check ready to be picked up soon afterwards David! Peter said patting him on the shoulder.

What if David isn't on duty when something gets out of control? What then? Barnes asked. Who's going to program those things?

I'm always as close as a phone call Captain Barnes. My cell phone is linked to my suit, so when it rings, my cell phone beeps and shows me that there is a call directed from the suit. That's when I just jump in the suit and make my way to where the trouble is. David replied.

David has been all over the country and can be anywhere in a blink of an eye Barnes, Flanagan said. We have to trust that David will come when we call him. Even if it means we have to wait for him to finish what he's doing at the time to get to us, I'm confident that he'll come at a time in need. He's done it before, and I trust he'll always be there to answer the call when need be.

Yes Captain Barnes, Peter interjected. You need to relax a bit more and give David some trust that he's given you. Constantly spouting out as you have been made me wonder if you plan to use those things on David if given the chance.

I would never do that, Barnes replied hastily. It's just that there should be more than one person that should be in charge of programming those things in case David is off somewhere doing his thing in another state.

Nancy looked at David and spoke out. I know how to program them just as easily as David can. If you need some done I can do them. But under one condition. You must have David contact me with the information needed to program them. Otherwise, I can't do it.

You'll need more than one bracelet for each person you arrest with them, John added. They only stay charged for so long and then the person can use their ability again. One on the charger, one on the person. Otherwise, you'll be spending a whole lot more money in tranquilizer darts keeping them down while you charge them up.

Yes! At the facility, we all came from. They drugged us to knock us out for hours on end to charge those awful things up. George added. That place was more like a prison than the hospital they claimed it was. Being held prisoner for all those years just because we could do something they couldn't, was horrible. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But if they break the law, then they deserve it.

We have to have a bunch available just in case someone who has an ability wishes for it to go away too, Harriet added. Nancy should be the one to program those for the business. There's no certainty at what age a person's ability will manifest. I was in my teens when mine manifested, David's manifested at birth.

So most of you escaped from that facility? Most of you have different abilities? Barnes asked.

Yes some of the people here came from that facility, and then there are their children and grandchildren, Janice replied for the group. Don't ask them what they can do, or what they have done. All that matters is that they are here for everyone's safety and willing to assist in kind.

David worked out some numbers with Derek, Nikki, Peter, and Harry for a while about the start-up for the business and re-payment structure. Commissioner Flanagan sat in for pricing out the units so that the police force could be able to afford them as well as leaving enough profit for Derek and Nikki. Peter added in the calculations that he would push an executive order to assist the police department in funding for the bracelets to ease the burden off the precinct. When all the numbers were crunched it was time to get the President back to the White House as they had been gone for almost the entire afternoon and half the night.

David put his hand on each of their shoulders and vanished back to the White House to drop them off. Thank you for your time, Peter. It means a great deal having you on the team. David said graciously.

I've seen your actions for the betterment of our society David. I'm just doing what you ask for everyone to do, be helpful to others. Peter replied with a smile. What you are doing to help maintain peace and protect people goes far above what's expected of a police officer. I'm just trying to not only be a good president but a good person by helping you with whatever you need the government to assist you with.

There is one thing you can do though about this whole situation. David led. We'd rather not have it known that your office is involved with the production of these bracelets to restrict a person's ability. It may be seen as though your party is looking for ways to control people with abilities and they may fear your party's position about this topic. Your party may not get elected in the future if it seems that you are trying to control people with abilities, and that could be bad for them as well.

There's always two ways to look at an object, you are right, Peter replied. If my party can't keep the registration bills out of congress, things could get very bad for everyone. That would cause more fear than just having that RAT facility hanging around.

Exactly my point, David replied. If people think that the ones with abilities are dangerous when they are calm, fire them up with having to register and expose themselves to the population and see what they do when they are frightened. Sometimes when people get scared, they do some dumb things by accident without realizing it. Imagine that person doing something dumb with an ability. It could be catastrophic.

I'll talk it over with my party in a private meeting, Peter said in thought. I'll make sure they understand the importance of keeping it concealed.

Want Maxx to come and help bring the point across? David offered. Maybe if they saw how some things could get out of control, in a controlled setting, they might be more open to the suggestion.

That might be a good idea son, Peter said with a giggle, imagining some of his party members' faces with seeing Maxx's abilities in person. I'll text you when I have everything set up.

With that, David felt it was time to get back home. He thanked them again for his assistance and, generosity on the government's behalf, then vanished back to his home where most of the group was still there talking about the new business for Derek and Nikki.

Steve and Beth pulled David aside when he got home to talk in private. David we've got everything we need at this point in our business so far, Steve told him. But if you don't mind if later we can plug your ear about some expenses later on if need be. We're making a really good living with this business that you've helped us discover, and we are forever thankful. But even you can't tell us everything about the future for our business.

As I said in the meeting, I'd be more than willing to equal out the money I help Derek and Nikki with the rest of my friends, David replied. And off topic a bit. When are you two going to tie the knot? Claire has been asking me for months about it. David hinted at them.

We're good the way we are right now David, Beth said with a smile. You'll be the first to know when we do decide.

David you're the best man in two weddings this year already. How many weddings do you want to stand up for this year? Sometimes it's best to spread them out a bit. Steve laughed.

Hey, I'm just saying that, even though Brad and Lauren are getting married in May and, Ron and Nikki in July, there's still lots of time to book you in. David smiled. Even if it is for the Engagement announcement party. Remember that Claire and I were engaged for a few years before we got married.

Steve thought about the idea and it showed on his face. David could see the wheels turning, but Beth was completely unaware of the clues on Steve's face.
