Chapter 1
The Money Meltdown
Meet Charlie and Emily—a charming, young married couple who will tell you flat out that they’ve made a mess of their finances. Completely honest about their financial crisis, they admit that they’re headed for a meltdown and don’t know what to do next.
Meet Jack, Charlie’s best friend since third grade. Unlike Charlie and Emily, Jack and his wife, Kelli, aren’t held captive by their finances. Therefore, they’re not burdened by financial worries. Yet Charlie knows that Jack and Kelli pull in less income than he and Emily.
It drives Charlie crazy that Jack avoids financial paralysis, while he and Emily live in financial chaos. How does Jack do it? The question nags at Charlie.
One Saturday, Charlie and Jack were driving to the local rebuild-housing project, where they volunteer once a month. Suddenly, Charlie blurted out, Jack, how do you avoid financial chaos and captivity?
Jack thought for a minute. What do you mean?
"How do you and Kelli manage to stay out of debt, save for your children’s college education, and afford to let Kelli’s brother live rent free in the condo you own while he’s between jobs?"
It’s easy nowadays,
Jack said. I just put into practice some habits my dad taught me as a kid. He called them the Four Financial Habits.
Four Financial Habits?
Charlie couldn’t believe it. That’s it? That’s all you do to stay out of financial trouble—follow some habits?
Yep,
Jack said. That’s it.
Charlie and Jack grew up across the street from each other. They did everything together with their dads. What was Charlie missing?
Charlie, do you remember how our dads would take us on all kinds of adventures and outings when we were growing up?
Charlie nodded. He cherished those memories.
At some point our dads would usually end up talking about finances,
Jack said. Remember?
Uh-huh,
Charlie said. Budgets, saving, other stuff like that. Yeah, I remember. They were always bouncing ideas off each other. But I didn’t pay much attention.
Jack smiled politely. I guess I did.
A light bulb went on in Charlie’s head. So maybe if I’d paid more attention, Emily and I would be enjoying the same financial freedom you are right now?
Pretty much.
Jack shrugged as he said it. Of course, it’s not too late, ya know.
It sure feels like it.
Jack rubbed his temples. You wouldn’t believe how far behind we are.
Tell you what,
Jack said, not missing a beat, why don’t we get together for coffee once a month, and I’ll refresh your memory on the four financial habits our dads always talked about.
Charlie nodded.
Just keep in mind that even though I’ll share all kinds of tips with you—the only way to avoid financial meltdown is to actually incorporate those four big habits into your life.
Charlie cocked his head. Jack practically heard the gears turning in his friend’s head.
"I’m not going to lie to you, Charlie. I had to swallow my pride a bit to form new habits, but it
