The Ghost in the Guestroom: Gary and Bill Adventures, #1
()
About this ebook
Gary Novak is still haunted by memories of Vietnam. Bill Prescott is haunted by something completely different, and very much in the here and now.
Luckily for Gary and Bill, they live in Mesquite Springs, Texas, where dealing with hauntings is usually just a matter of inspiration, motivation, and determination. And good advice from the local witch, of course.
Gary's got the motivation part down, because until that ghost is gone, he hasn't got a ghost of a chance with Bill.
Since Gary and Bill first appeared in Not a Werewolf, readers have asked for more about this colorful couple. Their later adventures appear in Not a Witch and the Hill Country Witches series. The Gary and Bill Adventures follow their younger days, starting with the beginning of their relationship in The Ghost in the Guestroom.
~13,000 words.

Author’s Note
Because you asked for it. Since their first appearance in Not a Werewolf, readers have wanted to see more of Gary and Bill. Well, as Amelia Sharpe says, be careful what you wish for, because I’ll be writing more of these as time allows. Gary is one of my favorite characters to write, and I hope you enjoy this tale of how Gary and Bill became Gary and Bill.
Mesquite Springs, Texas
November 1975
––––––––
Officer Gary Novak looked up from the report he was typing, two fingers at a time, when the Chief stopped by his desk.
Go check this one out, Novak,
Chief Stubbs said, tearing a sheet of paper from the notepad he was holding. Mesquite Springs Savings & Loan.
Gary stood and took the slip, scanning it. Attempted burglary? Should I take back-up?
It’s all over with, and they didn’t take anything. Just left behind a mess, sounds like. Talk to Bill Prescott, he’s the assistant manager and called it in.
Yessir,
Gary answered, picking up his uniform cap and the squad car keys. He could have walked the eight blocks to the Savings & Loan, but he figured it would be more impressive if he took the car, especially if Bill Prescott happened to be looking out the window when he got there.
––––––––
Bill Prescott looked out the window of his office for – what was it now? – the third time? He loosened his tie and went to stand in the doorway, surveying the debris scattered around the lobby. The bank was supposed to open in half-an-hour, but he couldn’t clean up the mess until the police had come.
The slamming of a car door caught his attention, and he went to the entrance to see Gary Novak sauntering up the sidewalk.
Yes, Gary,
he muttered to himself, we all see you looking like sex on wheels in your uniform, but some of us have jobs to do.
Gary looked up then and made eye contact, so Bill dropped his eyes, focusing on unlocking and opening the inner door so the other man could enter.
Gary whistled out a long note as he surveyed the state of the lobby. Hoo boy, they left a mess, didn’t they?
Yes,
Bill answered, hands on his hips and a frown on his face. And we need to open in half-an-hour.
Anybody else here? Any of the tellers?
No, I was the first one in and I called the head teller and told her not to come in until right before opening. She called everyone else.
Gotcha.
Gary pulled out a notepad and pen, flipping to a new page. So walk me through what you found when you got here, what’s out of place and so on.
Bill took Gary to the back entrance and walked him through his morning so far. I came in through the back door. What’s so funny?
Nothin’, nothin’,
Gary answered, stepping outside as he tried to force his face into a serious expression. He examined the door latches and the painted surfaces around the locks. "You didn’t notice anything suspicious at that point? No signs
