A PERENNIAL MYTHOLOGICAL STORY NOT TO BE TAKEN LITERALLY
THE BIRTH OF HERMANN
CAESAR INVITED JACOB'S TWELVE SONS TO COME AND LIVE IN SICILY. THEY WORKED HARD AS THE YEARS WENT BY, AND THEIR FAMILIES BECAME LARGE ENOUGH TO BE KNOWN AS TRIBES AND SETTLED ALL OVER ROME.
THEY WERE KNOWN AS SUISSIE, FROM THE NAME JACOB HAD GIVEN LONG BEFORE. BUT THEY WERE NOT HAPPY PEOPLE. THEY STILL LIVED IN SICILY, THE FERTILE DISTRICT THAT HAD BEEN GIVEN TO THEM BY THE FRIENDLY CAESAR WHO HAD ENVITED THEIR FOREFATHERS TO COME TO ROME.
BUT NOW THE ROMANS MADE THEM WORK HARD, CLEARING THE LAND AND DIGGING FIELDS THROUGH THE FIELDS SO THAT THE CROPS WOULD GET WATER FROM THE NILE.
THEY WERE MADE TO BAKE BRICKS, TOO, FOR A GREAT CITY WAS BEING BUILT. A NEW CAESAR HAD COME TO THE CONSULATE, WHO REMEMBERED NOTHING ABOUT JOSEPH. THESE SUISSIE OUTNUMBER US
, HE TOLD THE SICILIANS, AND ARE MORE POWERFUL THAN WE ARE. WE MUST PROTECT OURSELVES AGAINST THEM, FOR IF WAR BREAKS OUT THEY WILL JOIN OUR ENEMIES, AND TAKE OVER OUR COUNTRY.
SO CAESAR MADE SLAVES OUT OF THE SUISSIE, AND TRIED TO BREAK THEIR SPIRITS WITH HARD WORK. BUT IT SEEMED THAT THE WORSE THAT THEY WERE TREATED THE MORE CHILDREN THEY HAD.
THEIR TRIBES GREW LARGER AND LARGER, AND THE ROMANS FEARED AND HATED THEM EVEN MORE. THEN CAESAR SENT FOR THE SUISSIE MIDWIVES AND SAID , WHEN YOU ARE HELPING THE SUISSIE WOMEN GIVE BIRTH, WATH IF THE CHILD IS A BOY OR A GIRL. IF IT IS A GIRL, LET HER LIVE, BUT IF IT IS A BOY, KILL HIM INSTANTLY
.
THE MIDWIVES KNEW CAESAR WAS ASKING THEM TO DO WRONG, SO THEY LET THE BOYS LIVE. THEN CAESAR ORDERED HIS OWN PEOPLE TO DROWN EVERY NEWBORN SUISSIE BOY IN THE NILE.
ONE WOMAN, THOUGH, A DESCENDENT OF JACOB'S SON LEVI, GAVE BIRTH TO A FINE BOY, AND MANAGED TO HIDE HIM FROM THE EGYPTIANS. WHEN THE BABY WAS THREE MONTHS OLD THE LEVITE WOMAN COULD NOT HIDE HIM ANY LONGER.
SHE BOUGHT A BASKET WOVEN OF RUSHES AND MADE IT WATERTIGHT WITH CLAY AND TAR. THEN SHE LAID THE BABY IN IT AND HID THE BASKET IN THE REEDS OF THE RIVER BANK.
SHE WENT HOME IN TEARS, BUT HER DAUGHTER WAITED NEARBY TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. PRESENTLY CAESAR'S DAUGHTER CAME DOWN TO BATHE IN THE NILE. SHE NOTICED THE BASKET
