About this ebook
Fred Carlson
Fred Carlson has been investing in youth ministry his entire adult life. Born in 1948 on a humble, Minnesota dairy farm, he grew up with six brothers, learning what it means to be rich in spirit, though monetarily poor. For nearly 20 years he has volunteered in bringing messages of hope and addiction recovery to inmates in county jails and federal prisons, where darkness and discouragement run thick. His email devotional Lifetimes is read by thousands near and far, including readers in the USA, Africa, China, Germany, and Mexico. Presenting story-based devotionals in a captivating and credible way brings a tone of fresh hope into his faith-based approach to healing. “Life is about recovery; in-Christ we can rise above our selfishness, the universal illness, every person’s prison.” RenewalAmen.com

Introduction
I had passed by the small flower earlier without giving it much notice. But now the day was far spent, and the setting sun was resting low on the soft, saltwater horizon. Brilliant beams of backlight came streaming through its fragile translucent petals. The resolute light gave voice to the flower: I’ll not remain silent; I have much to say.
I listened, feeling both admonished and privileged at the same moment. Once again, the Holy Spirit was graciously attempting to enter my consciousness. I was given a vivid awareness of His presence and purpose. The eternal stepped into my temporal physical world to rescue me from nearsightedness. My soul opened to the warmth of His companionship as He spoke to my heart: I send signs and symbols of light into your life to capture your attention; I desire more for you. I care about how you spend your days. Your walk and attitude are prone to missing out on the greatest gifts I’ve provided for you. Listen and respond to the call of my voice, lest you abandon the many blessings of my great and precious promises. (Inspired by 2 Peter 1:1-10)
Life is a continuous contest between the temporal and the eternal. Man naturally loves to trust in science, numbers and technology. We are indeed data-driven and generally proud of it. Information has become our security blanket of choice, but data has no love for mankind. Lasting contentment comes only through prayerful communion with God.
"Prayer is a pasturage, a field, wherein all the virtues
find their nourishment, growth, and strength."
Catherine of Siena, 1347
For each of us there is deep inside, a loving voice, competing for our attention. When we pause to listen intently and singularly to that one voice, we enter into a greater reality. It is a sacred place where lasting encouragement waits for us, dispelling fear, and literally grasping our hearts, defeating the mediocrity, burdens, and dooming pressures of the hour.
I urge the reader to make the reading of this devotional a 31-day consistent exercise. Don’t read ahead, but rather reserve time to prayerfully ponder the daily challenge, Today in-Christ.
As you taste and savor the scriptures, your personal benefit will blossom.
You will notice I often use the term "in-Christ." The meaning may be found in Psalms:
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]. I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I [confidently] trust! Psalms 91:1-2 AMPC
To live in-Christ is to consciously, deliberately, desire the presence of the Holy Spirit. It can be likened to opening a door and walking into a new dwelling place. This is indeed the secret place within the heart where only you and the Holy Spirit can go. In this place, God speaks and brings profound healing and strength. It is a place of refuge; it is a fortress from which we can confidently fight our battles.

Recovery
When I first saw the afflicted tree, I felt a sad realization.
