Bella stumbled in the long grass, quickly tucking herself into a ball and rolling in a sloppy somersault. She saw a moment of blue sky whirling overhead and a blinding flash of sunbeams just before Emma bowled into her from behind. Emma’s pointy little elbow jabbed into her back, and they both fell back on the thick grass in a tangle of arms and legs.
Ouch,
mumbled Bella. Then she looked over to her younger sister who was rubbing her thigh. You OK, Emma?
she asked.
You’ve got a hard head, Bell!
Emma said. Then the corners of her mouth lifted, and she rolled over and started tickling Bella on her ribs. Bella howled in laughter and quickly rolled away from Emma’s little hands. Then Bella pounced, easily overpowering her little sister and mercilessly tickling her in retaliation. It was one of the advantages of being bigger.
Emma screeched and giggled, begging Bella to stop. As soon as her sister cried, Uncle!
, Bella jumped up and said, You’re it! Catch me if you can!
Then she took off around the yard with Emma chasing behind.
A few minutes later, both girls fell to the ground, sweating and breathless. As they lay back on the soft grass with their arms stretched out in front of them, they heard something strange.
Both girls sat up at the same time. Directly across from them at the edge of their yard, a large black and white cat sat on its hind legs with its front paws held midair. It was looking up and making funny chirrup sounds at a squirrel in a tree overhead. The girls gasped in delight, stood up slowly, and stealthily crept closer. They didn’t want to scare the cat away. The squirrel scrambled around the tree and disappeared into the upper branches. The girls stopped and waited to see if the cat would run away, but it just relaxed and looked over at them with sparkling green eyes.
Meow,
the cat said. It tipped its head a little as if to say, ‘Who are you?’
Hello!
Bella and Emma said in almost perfect unison.
Mrr,
replied the cat. Then it strolled fearlessly toward them and started to twine between their legs.
Oh!
squealed Emma as her little hands shook excitedly in front of her.
They bent over and squatted down, petting the cat and talking in incoherent little phrases. The cat seemed to love the attention. It had a little red collar with a tiny bell on it. Its eyes were such a pretty color of green, and its fur was shiny and clean. The girls fell in love.
A moment later the cat bounded across the yard and disappeared behind some bushes. The girls quickly followed but stopped short when they saw the cat brushing up against a woman sitting on a stool next to the bushes. The cat bounded back over to them and let out another, Meow.
The woman turned on the stool and looked over at the girls.
Oh! Hello there!
she said with a big friendly smile on her face. The woman was wearing gloves, an apron, and a wide brimmed straw hat. She had a white braid that went past her shoulder, and her eyes were as blue as the summer sky.
I see you’ve met Boomer,
she said with a merry laugh. He’s very friendly. I hope you like cats!
Yes! We love cats!
