What we have once enjoyed we can never lose,

for all we deeply love becomes a part of us.

    my shoes settle

    among the delicate prints

    of oystercatchers

    that peck at

    seaweed

    crabs

    sandhoppers

    shells

    I am Gulliver

    on this shore

    watching their long bills

    red as sunsets

    work in unison

    with lapping waves.

    That moment you flung yourself

    into my present

our future stretched like crazy paving

the possible stark-lit in black and white

its danger flashes sharp as jagged glass

    irresistible as blood-pink sundew

    yet rainbowed with delight

    love, laughter

    a kind of happiness allowed

    a hope of breaking patterns

    surviving pain

a hope that maybe this time
