RaPaul Jayson cautiously balanced his books, bags, lunch, briefcase, and gym bag in his arms and over his shoulder as he used his leg to shut the door of the car.

He hoped to God that he wouldn’t step on ice and go flying. He stayed on the salted paths, his breath a small smoke screen in front of his glasses as he shuffled to the teacher’s entrance to the school.

Stacy held open the door for him. Got enough stuff there?

Forgot the dog.

She laughed.
