Empower Without Hate - Davion Farmer

    Forward – Sandra Harrison

When I got the call about Davion’s birth, it wasn’t your traditional ‘baby is here’ call

My son’s nervous voice said his son had been airlifted to Children’s hospital.

I remember being terrified.  Stunned for what could possibly happen.

Over the years I worried about opportunities for Davion.  As a parent of a child living with special needs, I knew what the family was up against.

I wanted to support his mom but felt concerned about my place.

I am (and was) the mother who had just celebrated the birth of my 2nd. grandson born to my son and his ex-wife. This was complicated.

And though he didn’t ask to be here, Davion always had a place in everyone’s heart.

When I met Davion for the first time, it was Christmas 20?

    He was so small.

    Bright.

Glowed like the sun shined within him.

I remember how much his mom embraced the moment with him. She was so happy about him. You could see the joy in her eyes.

    I took toys.

    Lots of toys.

My internal pain for how he entered the family line was heavy.  Tomeka Farmer, (Davion’s mom), embraced it, carried it and showed us complete grace.  It’s where he gets his empathy.

Davion held my finger that day. He wrapped his little hand around my baby finger and he became our grandson at that moment.  He could not have been more perfect. With my husband by my side, we welcomed our newest grandchild to the fold.

He is the perfect balance of family.  His parents love(d) him unconditionally. They proved that. Even when it was difficult to do, they showed him unconditional love.

I watched my son with his boys, of which Davion was the middle child, with middle boy tendencies and middle kid strength.

As we learned of his supposed deficits over the years, Davion showed signs of incredible strength, character and resilience.

Davion has always been an honor student and a community servant leader.

He demonstrates the soundest mind of any young person his age.

As an advocate for people living with disabilities, he offers unwavering hope and love.

Davion is more than a leader; he leads with compassion, he leads with intention, honor and he leads with respect.

Young Mr. Farmer is of Royal Harrison descent.  He represents everything that his father ever hoped for him. As the living voice for his father / my only son, lost to Chicago's gun violence just 7 months ago this day.  I honor both Darryl Harrison Jr. and his son, my grandson, Davion.

Congratulations to young Davion for being the light. Thank you for sharing your work and your passion with us all. We appreciate your pen to paper.
