General State Facts
*On December 10th, 1817, Mississippi became the 20th state to join the union.
*The state was named after The Mississippi River, which got it’s name from an Ojibwa word meaning big river.
*Mississippi’s current state capitol is Jackson, but prior to 1812, Natchez served as the first state capitol.
*Blues music was born in the Mississippi Delta, in the northwest section of the state.
*The University of Mississippi is home to the Marijuana Research Project. It is the only federally-funded center entirely devoted to cultivating cannabis and experimenting on the plant’s medicinal benefits.
*The state of Mississippi has more churches per capita when compared to any other state.
*Forests and woodlands cover 63% of Mississippi’s total land area.
*The term teddy bear
originated in Mississippi. President Theodore Roosevelt was hunting in the state when he refused to kill a trapped bear in 1902, and thus, the term was born.
*In The Heat of The Night, a popular court television drama during the 1990s, is set in the fictional town of Sparta, Mississippi.
*The Order of the Eastern Star was born in Mississippi.
*Pine Sol, a popular cleaning product, was invented in Mississippi in 1929 by chemist Harry A. Cole.
* The state of Mississippi is considered to be the farm-raised catfish capital of the world.
It earns this title with more than 100,000 acres of dedicated catfish ponds.
*In 1963, Dr. James Hardy at the University of Mississippi performed the world’s first human lung transplant.
